COEUR d'ALENE - Dakota Groves (220 pounds) and Matt James (285) won matches by pinfall for the Coeur d'Alene Vikings, which beat Priest River 45-39 before losing to East Valley 46-35 in season opening duals on Tuesday night at Coeur d'Alene High.

"I thought our guys were hustling and working hard," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "We were a little tight and nervous in the match against Priest River, but against East Valley, we came out and loosened up and wrestled them tough."

Coeur d'Alene, which was missing four starters due to injury, had forfeits at 106 and 113, which allowed the Knights to get the win.

"It came down to the final match and we still had the chance to pull it out," said Moffat of the East Valley match. "I liked our effort, but we need to get the right guys in the right weights. But the effort was there."

Coeur d'Alene will face Eagle and Borah on Thursday in a dual at Borah High in Boise.

Timberwolves fall to Knights,

beat Spartans in double dual

COEUR d'ALENE - Zion Dixon (285), Jacob Farnsworth (152), Cory Cook (170) and Jacob Ramey (195) won a pair of matches by pin for the Timberwolves in a double dual against the Knights and Spartans at Coeur d'Alene High.

Lake City lost to East Valley 44-36, before bouncing back to beat Priest River 60-30.

"I thought we actually wrestled really well tonight," Lake City coach Corey Owen said. "We had the 126-pound match with (Corey) Wells. We lost a couple of matches. We win a couple of those and we probably win the dual meet. I thought our kids scrapped really well. We game away too many pins (against East Valley). If we're going to beat good teams, you can't give up too many pins."

Lake City (2-1) competes at the St. Maries Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

SANDPOINT - Andrew Hansen of Timberlake trailed Tyler Brown 10-3 in the second period before catching Brown on his back and registering a surprise pin at 195.

Timberlake freshman Clayton Rundgren went up a weight class to 285 to face Sandpoint senior Talon Egbers, who immediately slammed Rundgren to the mat. After a couple minutes to check for a concussion, Rundgren rallied to earn a first period pin, and the respect of his coach.

"He's a gamer," said Tigers coach Ryan Montang, who loved how his freshman responded after getting body slammed. "I don't think he thought anything of it. He didn't let it bother him, he's a competitor."

Timberlake competes at the St. Maries Invitational this weekend.
