St. Maries eliminates Charter at 2A districts

MOSCOW - After dropping their first match Tuesday to second-seeded Grangeville, the third-seeded St. Maries Lumberjacks eliminated the fourth-seeded Coeur d'Alene Charter Panthers from the 2A District 1-2 tournament 25-12, 25-15, 25-17 later Tuesday at Moscow High.
St. Maries (7-16) was led on offense by Haylee Waddell, who had 11 kills and Kari Ghramm with eight kills. Madi McQueen had 14 digs, Kelsey Auer 22 assists and Kendall Brusseau and Cassandra Scott had two blocks each.
"We came out and played really tough," St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said.
Earlier, St. Maries lost to Grangeville 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 25-16. Waddell had 11 kills, Auer 23 assists and McQueen 10 digs for St. Maries, which was missing starting setter Toni Eells due to a concussion.
"I thought we started out against Grangeville pretty good," Asbury said. "They handled some changes pretty well."
Earlier, Cd'A Charter lost to top-seeded Orofino 25-11, 25-19, 25-16.
Taylor Petticolas had nine digs, Anna Verhaeghe five kills and one block and Taylor Garn seven assists for the Panthers.
"They're a good team," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Krista Brand said. "I expect them to do very well at state."
Garn had 12 digs and 11 assists, Verhaeghe two blocks, Petticolas five kills and Libby Goodwin two aces for Coeur d'Alene Charter against St. Maries.
Charter finishes 8-16.
"We played some tough matches this year," Brand said. "We're only losing two seniors, so I'm looking forward to next season."
St. Maries plays the Grangeville-Orofino loser on Thursday.
Kellogg, Priest River
reach 3A district title match tonight
RATHDRUM - Andee Wendt had 12 kills and two blocks for the top-seeded Kellogg Wildcats in a 25-12, 25-14, 25-11 win against the fourth-seeded Timberland Tigers to advance to the championship game of the 3A District 1 tournament tonight at Hawk Court at Lakeland High.
Jasmine James had eight kills, McKenna Stewart and Meghan Day 12 digs each for Kellogg (12-9), which faces second-seeded Priest River (13-4) at 6:30 p.m. in the championship match. Priest River, which finished second at state last year, beat Bonners Ferry in five games earlier on Tuesday.
The winner advances to the state tournament starting next Friday at either Post Falls, Lake City or Coeur d'Alene High.
Kiara Hauck had nine digs, Ayla Jelinek five kills and two digs, Shea Dretke four kills, three digs and one block and Matraca Rocheleau seven assists for Timberlake (3-23), which faces Bonners Ferry (11-16) in a loser-out match today at 5 p.m.

HAYDEN - Sydney Lawson had 13 kills for the visiting Royals in a 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 win against the Lions in Mountain Christian League play.
Breanna Clemans had 18 assists, Maura Lund 13 digs and Rayla Andrews six aces and three blocks for North Idaho Christian (15-3, 11-3 MCL), which hosts Christian Heritage of Edwall, Wash., on Thursday.
