CALDWELL — In its second trip to the state 4A boys soccer tournament in school history, Lakeland advanced to the semifinals for the first time on Thursday, beating Century of Pocatello 3-1 in the first round at Brothers Park.

Junior forward Auston Henry of the Hawks (7-11-2) took a goal kick from goalkeeper Cade Coffey over the top. Henry ran over the final third of the field and scored in the 15th minute from six yards out off his right foot, after a defender came onto Henry’s right-hand side.

“Auston had really great composure and kicked it off the goalie’s hand,” Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said.

This is the first state tournament Craig has reached as a coach. In 2011, Lakeland won the consolation championship with Nick Haynes as coach.

At 1 p.m. PDT today at Brothers Park, Lakeland faces Jerome, the District 4 No. 1 seed.

The winner of today’s game plays in the state championship Saturday at 6 p.m. at Middleton High, against the Wood River-Mountain Home winner. The loser of today’s game will play at noon on Saturday in the third-place game at Brothers Park, against the Wood River-Mountain Home loser.

“We’re pretty excited about it,” Craig said of Thursday’s win. “It’s the second time for the team having gone into state. It’s the first time we’ve ever won to go into the semifinals. We’re peaking at the right time and we’re hoping to get two more wins.”

Fernando Pimentel scored his first goal in the 45th minute for a 2-0 Hawks lead. He received a pass, then shielded the defender from his left side, got two touches, and ripped the ball from the top of the 18-yard line for the goal.

“Century was pretty tough coming into it and it’s a good win for Lakeland,” Craig said.

Boise 7

Lake City 1

MERIDIAN — Lake City allowed a record-tying amount of goals in a loss to Boise in first round of the state 5A boys soccer tournament at Rocky Mountain High.

Since the school opened in 1994, the goals allowed tied for the most the Timberwolves have allowed in their program’s history. It also happened three previous times, most recently in 2004, when Lake City lost 7-0 to Centennial in the state quarterfinals. That was the season before current coach Chad Beadell took over as coach.

Lake City plays a consolation bracket game at 8 a.m. at Eagle High against Madison, the No. 1 seed from District 5-6.

“That’s the most we’ve allowed ever,” Beadell said. “They (Boise) are very talented. It was one of those days where every little mistake we made, they took advantage of. The boys played hard. Everything that could go right for them did and everything that could go wrong for us did.”

Senior midfielder Vincent Cavalin scored the lone goal for the Timberwolves (9-3-4) on an assist from junior midfielder Ryan Swallow.

Boise (16-1-2) led 3-1 with 17 minutes left. Braves forward Carter Perry dominated the match with four goals scored, while Ryan Davey and Samuel Rucklos each scored once.

“We had to start pushing numbers forward to try and catch up and score,” Beadell said.

Goalkeeper Tanner Horton made 10 saves for Lake City, which also had an own goal.

Boise goalkeeper Grant Billings made six saves.

Timberline 1

Post Falls 0

EAGLE — Goalkeeper Noah Gondo made five saves, but defending state 5A boys soccer champion and Region 1 champion Post Falls lost to District No. 3 seed Timberline in an upset at Eagle High.

Cole Fuller scored the lone goal of the game for Timberline (11-7-0), on an assist by Josh Fishburn. Goalkeeper Parker Billings made three saves against the Trojans (10-6-1), who were shut out for only the third time this season.

At 8 a.m. PDT today at Rocky Mountain High in Meridian, Post Falls plays a consolation bracket game against Idaho Falls, the No. 2 seed from District 5-6.

The consolation championship is at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Eagle High.

Rocky Mountain 7

Post Falls 2

MERIDIAN — Post Falls cut a big lead down to size, but still lost to host Rocky Mountain in the quarterfinals of the state 5A girls soccer tournament.

The Trojans (10-5-2) will play in the consolation bracket at 8 a.m. PDT today at Meridian High against Highland (13-3-2) of Pocatello, the No. 1 seed from District 5-6.

Rocky Mountain took a 3-0 lead after the first nine minutes and took a 3-2 lead at halftime.

“They’re an explosive team,” Post Falls coach Briggs Anderson said. “They had speed, they had technical ability and they had really good offensive team shape in the final third. They executed very well.”

The Trojans scored their first goal off the foot of Erica Simpson in the 15th minute, which cut the lead to 3-1. Olivia Miller cleared the ball for about 50 yards for the assist, after Simpson took the ball off the bounce and scored on a breakaway from nearly 25 yards past drawn-out goalkeeper Taylor Cook.

It was Simpson’s 23rd goal of the season, which extended her school record for goals in a season.

“In this game they beat us,” Anderson said. They proved they were the better team and they’ll be a hard team for anyone to match up against in this tournament.”

Sadie Schmeling scored in the 20th minute scored off a free kick to cut the lead down to 3-2.

Rocky Mountain’s Raimee Scherle scored a hat trick, and Kayla Welch scored two goals. Kylie Stephens and Crystal Wiskerchen each scored once for Rocky (16-1-2).

Filer 2

Cd’A Charter 1

CALDWELL — It was a tough way to end an otherwise well-played state 3A soccer tournament debut for the Coeur d’Alene Charter Panther girls at Vallivue High.

Filer’s Maria Diaz received a corner kick in front of the goal and snuck it past the Coeur d’Alene Charter defense for the deciding goal with 28 seconds remaining as the Wildcats defeated the Panthers in the opening round.

“It was off a corner shot and it sat on the ground for 2 or 3 seconds and just snuck it in,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Dave Baxter said. “It was an awful way to lose the game.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter (12-4-3) will face Teton (7-9-3) today in a loser-out match. Teton lost to defending state champion McCall-Donnelly 4-0 on Thursday.

Abby Bartlett gave Coeur d’Alene Charter a 1-0 halftime lead.

“I thought we came out great,” Baxter said. “We had to play our starters a lot of minutes, and they were certainly tired at the end, but we were going really hard. It was really fast and physical and it was an intense match. We stood up to it and thought we were going to OT, but they had a lucky goal at the end. I couldn’t be prouder of my players.”

In other 3A play, Marsh Valley downed Bonners Ferry 1-0.

First half — 1, CCA, Abby Bartlett (Mary Nicklay), 7:14. Second half — 2, Fil, Darby Robertson (unassisted), 48:05. 3, Fil, Maria Diaz (unassisted), 79:32.

Shots on goal — CCA 8, Fil 13.
