MOSES LAKE — The Big Bend Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa added 19 new members in its spring induction ceremony Monday. Phi Theta Kappa is the National Honor Society for community colleges.
Rho Zeta, the BBCC chapter, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, and the induction ceremony has been around long enough to establish some of its own traditions. Each new member receives a white rose as part of the ceremony, and new inductees take an oath of membership in front of assembled family and friends. The roses are presented by BBCC president Terry Leas.
Dawna Haynes, BBCC dean of Student Services, was the guest speaker.
Students must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 and a recommendation from a faculty member to qualify for Phi Theta Kappa. Students must have completed a minimum of 15 quarter hours at BBCC and must be enrolled for at least 15 academic hours in the current semester.
The 2018 inductees included Jesus Aceves-Fuentes, Royal City; Shalene Lybbert, Moses Lake; Allen Hermans, Soap Lake; Elizabeth Guadarrama, Royal City; Lillian Foster, Moses Lake, Mickayla Cummins, Moxee; Ashley Martin, Coulee City; Javier Ramirez, Othello; Ava Heathman, Hartline; Amanda Cantu, Othello; Mariah Lohr, Moses Lake; Juan Servin, Moses Lake, Derek Wright, Ephrata; Ian Goben, Kennewick; Stephanie Cardenas, Moses Lake; Adele Dorman, Moses Lake; Adriana Espino, Royal City and Bret Mathyer, Moses Lake.
