Big Bend CC holds Honor Society induction

Senior Reporter Cheryl Schweizer is a journalist with more than 30 years of experience serving small communities in the Pacific Northwest. She began her post-high-school education at Treasure Valley Community College and enerned her journalism degree at Oregon State University. After working for multiple publications, she has settled down at the Columbia Basin Herald and has been a staple of the newsroom for more than a decade. MOSES LAKE — The Big Bend Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa added 19 new members in its spring induction ceremony Monday. Phi Theta Kappa is the National Honor Society for community colleges.
Rho Zeta, the BBCC chapter, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, and the induction ceremony has been around long enough to establish some of its own traditions. Each new member receives a white rose as part of the ceremony, and new inductees take an oath of membership in front of assembled family and friends. The roses are presented by BBCC president Terry Leas.
Dawna Haynes, BBCC dean of Student Services, was the guest speaker.
Students must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 and a recommendation from a faculty member to qualify for Phi Theta Kappa. Students must have completed a minimum of 15 quarter hours at BBCC and must be enrolled for at least 15 academic hours in the current semester.

Wahluke DiscoverWorks summer experiment proving successful
MATTAWA — The Wahluke School District experimented with a new summer learning opportunity, and it looks like a success. The district was one of the first group of schools in Washington to be selected for the DiscoverWorks summer program, the work of a Michigan-based foundation, the Ballmer Group. Bethany Martinez, director of WSD’s Department of Migrant and Multilingual Services, said most children who joined the program stayed with it to the end.
