PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings hold off Moscow in first game since Jan. 5

COEUR d’ALENE — Coach Jon Adams wanted to find a way to build something in his first-year at his alma mater of Coeur d’Alene High.

Those pieces are starting to come into place again.

Cameren Cope scored 12 of his 18 points in the third quarter as the host Vikings beat the Moscow Bears 53-50 in an Inland Empire League game at Viking Court on Tuesday, the Vikings first game since Jan. 5 due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the program.

“We really didn’t know what we were going to have tonight,” said Adams, whose team had practices fully twice before the game. “Some of our guys were gassed at halftime, and we went into it very nervous we wouldn’t be able to play the style of game we wanted to.”

Alex Reyes hit two free throws in the final six seconds after getting fouled on a 3-pointer with Coeur d’Alene leading 51-50.

“We’re trying to build this program, and it’s been a hurdle to figure out how to get a lead and hold onto it,” Adams said. “The guys played smart down the stretch and we did a good job of knocking down our free throws.”

Steven Burgess scored 12 points for Coeur d’Alene (3-5, 2-2 IEL), which travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

Barrett Abendroth scored 19 points for Moscow (4-5, 2-3).

COEUR d’ALENE — The offense was sharp, the defense was strong and that resulted in the Timberwolves remaining unbeaten in Inland Empire League play.

Kolton Mitchell had 18 points and six rebounds and Chris Irvin had 13 points and six rebounds as the Timberwolves beat the Bengals at Lake City High.

“Offensively, we were much sharper than we had been,” said Lake City coach Jim Winger, whose team led 40-22 at halftime. “Tonight, we just played an all-around good game. Offensively we were sold and defensively, we were really solid. We played great as a team and had a lot of different guys score.”

Varick Meredith scored 12 points and Jack Kiesbuy had 11 points for Lake City (9-4, 4-0 IEL), which hosts Lakeland on Friday.

George Forsmann scored 10 points — all in the first half — for Lewiston (6-5, 3-4).

“I thought we did a good job on him to hold him to 10 points,” Winger said of Forsmann. “He’s a smooth big man, and the kids did a good job with covering him.”

PLUMMER — It could wind up being a building moment for Lakeside coach James Twoteeth.

Although for at least the first eight minutes of a Scenic Idaho Conference matchup, it might not have seemed like it.

Vander Brown had 31 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Knights, who beat the Miners without three starters due to quarantine from a close exposure to COVID-19.

“We had to bring up some JV kids, and our subs really stepped up,” Twoteeth said. “Vander, he did a really good job and it could be a blessing in disguise because it helped build his confidence.”

JJ Hall added 18 points and Brutis SiJohn added 13 points for Lakeside (10-1, 2-0 SIC), which is scheduled to host Troy, Mont., on Friday.

“Both Vander and JJ really stepped up tonight,” Twoteeth said. “We got through it and got a win.”
