BOYS BASKETBALL

SANDPOINT — Zach Johnson had 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Lake City Timberwolves toppled the Sandpoint Bulldogs 70-55 in nonleague play Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

Kolton Mitchell added 16 points, seven assists and five steals, and Blake Buchanan had eight points and six rebounds for Lake City (11-0).

“Our early offense and half-court offense was pretty good,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “Defensively we broke down more than we have this year. I told the kids we’ve played some good basketball, but we haven’t put together four quarters yet.”

The Bulldogs (3-6) shrunk Lake City’s lead to 43-40 about three minutes into the second half on a basket from Ethan Butler and trailed by 9 points entering the fourth quarter.

However, the Timberwolves went on a 15-3 run to open the final quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs for good.

Parker Childs, who played on the Lake City JV team as a freshman, scored a team-high 21 points for the Bulldogs and hit five 3-pointers.

“Parker’s a gamer,” Sandpoint coach Brian Childs said about his son. “I had a feeling he would compete pretty well tonight. He made some mistakes just like any sophomore is going to, but he competes and he typically doesn’t back down. I’m just really proud of how he kept grinding.”

Lake City plays at Coeur d’Alene on Friday in the Fight for the Fish spirit game, being held for the first time since 2020 after last year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19.

SPIRIT LAKE — Hunter Higgins scored seven of his 11 points in the second quarter, and Wyatt MacArthur tallied five of his seven off the bench in that period, sparking the Tigers to a win over the visiting Jaguars in nonleague play.

“We were playing a sagging man-to-man in the first half, and we were getting outhustled,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “So we went to a press in the second quarter, and that picked up our game all around.”

Raj Olivieri and Zach Yetter each scored 10 points for Timberlake (4-2), which outscored Genesis Prep 18-4 in the second quarter.

Ayson McCluskie and Joey Specht each scored nine points for Genesis Prep (5-3), which plays host to Mullan on Thursday.

“Both teams played really hard basketball; it was similar to a game you might see in late February,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said. “It was kind of a grind-it-out game. Both teams played really solid defensively.”

WRESTLING

Lewiston 53

Lake City 24

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Timberwolves won just three contested matches and suffered four pins in the loss to the Bengals.

“They wrestled well,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said of Lewiston. “I didn’t think we wrestled our best. I don’t think we looked very sharp, and we let some matches get away from us. It’s disappointing, because I know we’re better than we showed tonight.”

Owen had praise for Kenzie Lindsay (145 pounds) and Grey Shinkle (182), who each won by pin.

Lindsay had been wrestling at 152, but was moved down a weight with the postseason in mind.

“It was his first match at 45 and he looked great tonight,” Owen said. “Just looking at the district and state level, I think that’s his best chance to go to state and place at state.”

Lake City wrestles at the Pacific Northwest Classic at University High in Spokane on Friday and Saturday.
