EVERETT, Wash. — Freshman guard Payton Hagy hit a pair of free throws for North Idaho College to cut the deficit to 52-46 with 3:04 remaining, but Peninsula College of Port Angeles, Wash., the top seed from the North Region, limited the Cardinals without a field goal the rest of the way in a 56-48 win in the opening round of the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Everett Community College.

“We fought hard and gave it all we had,” NIC women’s basketball coach Korina Baker said. “We just struggled clicking it on offensively in the first half and took too long to get going.”

Peninsula outrebounded NIC 50-27.

“They just outworked us a little bit under the basket,” said Baker, whose team allowed 18 offensive rebounds. “We just couldn’t get a body on them and they just outworked us on that end. We fought hard and gave it everything we had. We just came up a little short.”

Kaylee Banks, a freshman from Sandpoint High, finished with 11 points for NIC, which finishes 14-11 in Baker’s first full season as interim coach after taking over for the retiring Chris Carlson in 2020.

The championships were not held in 2021 due to the pandemic, and NIC played a handful of regular-season games.

Peninsula (23-3) faces Portland (18-11) in the Elite 8 today. Portland upset second-seeded Centralia 86-75 in an opening round game on Saturday.
