COEUR d’ALENE — On a day when Lake City football celebrated the greatness of its past, the current Timberwolves ran into a bigger, stronger program Saturday afternoon.
Bishop Kelly of Boise ran for 236 yards and totaled 407 yards of offense in a 49-14 nonleague win over Lake City.
“BK’s a very good football team,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said. “They were very physical, they executed well at the beginning, they caught us on a couple plays early … and then they ran play-action. They were clicking early, and it took us a little bit to wake up and start slowing them down. They’re a good team.”
At halftime, Lake City honored the 2002 football team, coached by Van Troxel, which brought home the program’s first state title. Troxel started the T-Wolf football program in 1994, and coached for 22 seasons.
But before and after, it was all BK. The 4A Knights scored on their first four possessions (all in the first quarter), and seven of their first eight. BK never punted; on the only two drives that didn’t end in scores, the Knights missed a 42-yard field goal in the first half, and handed off twice in the closing minutes to run out the clock.
“We knew they (the Timberwolves) had some athletes,” said Tim Brennan, in his 12th season in his second stint as BK coach, and 27th year overall with the Knights. “Obviously we’re going to try to run the ball on everybody, because that’s our game plan. And defensively, try to keep things in front of us, break up some passes because we knew they had some athletes. Kids did a great job.”
After BK scored on its first three possessions, Lake City broke through when Justin Hill ran a slant route and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Pettit late in the first quarter.
Peter Minnaert, a junior fullback, rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries for Bishop Kelly (4-0). Senior quarterback Hadley Smith threw just 13 passes, but completed 10 for 171 yards and two scores, and he also ran for a 7-yard TD on a bootleg in the second quarter.
With a running clock in effect in the fourth quarter, Lake City took the ball at the start of the quarter and ate up more than 12 minutes before Pettit hooked up with Zach Johnson down the sideline for a 15-yard TD to complete the scoring.
Hill had seven catches for 59 yards, Johnson five for 52. Pettit was 17 of 30 for 171 yards, but was sacked five times, four in the first half.
Lake City turned the ball over on downs in its own territory on its first possession. On the next play. On the next play, Minnaert rumbled 36 yards off right tackle for a 14-0 lead.
Lake City then had a punt partially blocked, with BK taking over on the T-Wolf 34, and scoring two plays later on a 26-yard pass from Smith to Cooper Cammann.
BK outgained Lake City 407-214.
“I feel like we took a step from last week,” said Fulp, whose 5A T-Wolves lost 55-27 to another 4A school Emmett, last week in Baker City, Ore. “BK’s a very good football team, so that might not show in the score. We took our lumps this week; there’s going to be a lot to fix, but I was happy to see we played together for the whole game.”
Lake City travels to Moscow on Friday.
