PREP FOOTBALL: Wampus Cats fall in hard-fought battle against Lakeside

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 16, 2023 1:00 AM

Lakeside 37, Clark Fork 16

PLUMMER — Clark Fork fought hard all game long, but couldn’t prevail, falling 37-16 on Friday night to Lakeside at Lakeside High School.

Evrett Montgomery led the Wampus Cats Friday with three receptions for 72 yards, a touchdown, and an interception on defense. Montgomery now has four interceptions in four games this season.

Chase Sanroman played equally as well, rushing 15 times for 88 yards, hauling in two receptions for 25 yards, and completing a 50-yard touchdown pass. Dillon Ryan-Downing almost broke the 100-yard barrier, rushing six times for 97 yards. At quarterback, Ethan Howard, completed five passes for 53 yards.

“We started the game too slow,” Montgomery said. “We weren’t communicating well on offense and made too many mistakes throughout the game. However, we are going to keep our heads up. We finished the game strong and stayed together as a team. We’ll have a better game plan next week and will be ready to battle Mullan.”

Clark Fork head coach Patrick Young agreed the team needs to clean up some mistakes, but said the team battled hard tonight.

"Lakeside is a good, physical, tough team, and we have to give them credit," Young said. "They took us out of our game plan and made it tough on us to move the ball … we need to clean up some mistakes offensively and keep our heads up. We’ve got a lot of season left to play and we will find our rhythm.”

Lakeside, after going 2-7 last year, is off to a 3-1 start having defeated Wallace, Deary and now Clark Fork.

Clark Fork (2-2, 2-2) will look to get back on track and take down rival Mullan/St. Regis on Friday, Sept. 22, on the road.
