CHENEY — Eastern Washington men’s basketball announced three new hires Friday, with Will Turgeon and MicGuire Monson named as Eagle assistant coaches and Alex Hobbs hired as the director of Player Development.

Hobbs joins the Eagles after being an assistant coach for one season at Carroll College, where the Fighting Saints reached the Frontier Conference championship game and received a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. A former guard for Boise State, Hobbs earned the Mountain West Conference’s Sixth Man of the Year award in 2018 and received all-conference honors in 2019. He appeared in 120 games, making 42 starts, with the Broncos before playing a season with the Kordall Steelers in Luxembourg, Germany. 

"Alex comes to us from Carroll College, where he was Coach Lundgren's lead assistant,” EWU head coach Dan Monson said in a release. “Alex brings youth and enthusiasm to our team and will be able connect with players well. As an all-Mountain West level player at Boise State, he has been able to experience the game at the highest level, which will allow him to mentor our guys both on and off the court." 

Joining the Eastern coaching staff will be MicGuire Monson, who recently served as a graduate assistant at Long Beach State assisting in player development, booster relations and name, image and likeness opportunities. Prior to Long Beach State, Monson was a student assistant at Boise State where he contributed to player development and player relations.  

"MicGuire was part of our staff at Long Beach State for the past two years and has been around college basketball his entire life,” Dan Monson said. “He will be able to bring continuity to our program with my philosophies and values. MicGuire possesses a great work ethic and feel for the game that will make a strong positive impact on our team." 

Rounding out the three hires is Turgeon, who is coming off two years as a graduate assistant at Colorado, where he was tasked with creating scouting reports from film, managing road game operations and breaking down film of potential recruits. Colorado had a program-best 26-win season last winter, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament. 

"Will comes to us from a winning program in Colorado, where they advanced to the round of 32 in the 2024 NCAA tournament,” Dan Monson said. “His ability to connect and relate to people will be a great asset to our basketball program here at Eastern. As a head coach, it's important to hire loyal assistants who are willing to go the extra mile for the team, and I feel we've gotten that in Coach Turgeon." 

Dan Monson is in his first year as head coach for the Eagles, coming to Cheney after 17 seasons at Long Beach State. Monson is Long Beach State’s all-time winningest coach with 275 wins and has reached the NCAA Tournament four times in his 27 years of coaching at the Division I level.
