SALT LAKE CITY — Registration is open for the junior and adult National Holstein Convention, scheduled for June 24 through 27 in Salt Lake City.
Events, contests and seminars are scheduled throughout the first three days of the convention, with junior contestants receiving their awards at the convention finale June 27.
The first day features a number of events for junior participants, including the option to visit the historical This is the Place Park, highlighting Utah’s history. Adults and juniors also have the option of visiting the Richard W. Erickson Antique & Classic Power Museum.
The first day also includes an evening session for juniors, where they get a chance to hear from past Distinguished Junior Members, who will talk about what they learned from their experiences and how they use those lessons.
Junior participants hoping to qualify as DJMs will be interviewed the morning of June 25. The junior Prepared Public Speaking and Extemporaneous Speaking contests are scheduled for June 25. A dairy knowledge exam is scheduled for that evening.
Adult classes are scheduled all day June 25. “Holstein Horizons” speakers will be talking about dairy farm technology, dairy cattle genetics and on-farm processing, among other topics. A trade show is scheduled for June 25 and 26.
First rounds of the Dairy Bowl contest is June 25. A contest for juniors, it’s designed to test their knowledge of the industry, from dairy cattle nutrition and calf health to food safety. The finals are scheduled for June 27.
A workshop and forum for juniors will be June 26.
The annual Awards Luncheon is scheduled for June 25; with awards announced for adults and youth. Awards will include adult Distinguished Leader recognition and the introduction of DJM semifinalists.
The annual meeting for Holstein Association USA will be June 26 and 27, with the opening session including the Star of the Breed and Herds of Excellence awards and recognition of 40-year members. Delegates will vote on the board of director and officer candidates June 27.

Road closures, roundabout, mean construction season underway
EPHRATA — The grass is starting to turn green, the trees are starting to leaf out, construction crews are starting to build roundabouts – hey, it’s spring. At least one roundabout project is in its final phase, held over from fall 2025. The intersection of State Route 282 and Nat Washington Way will be closed the week of April 6 to allow crews to install permanent lights. “This really is the final (closure),” wrote Grant County Administrator Tom Gaines in a media release. “The roundabout will close at 6 a.m. Monday, and we plan to reopen by Friday, possibly sooner if the work finishes early.”
Ybarra announces run for Washington Senate
QUINCY — State Representative Alex Ybarra, R-Quincy, has announced his candidacy for the Washington Senate. If he’s elected, he would replace Judy Warnick, R-Moses Lake, who announced her retirement in March.
Othello Community Museum to open April 25
OTHELLO — With a couple of new exhibits, a new heating-cooling system, rearranged displays and a thorough cleaning, the Othello Community Museum will open for the summer April 25. The goal, said Molly Popchock, museum board secretary, is to operate for a full season.
