5A STATE GOLF: Sandpoint girls third after first round

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 11, 2024 6:00 PM

BURLEY — After the first 18 holes of the 5A State Golf Tournament, Sandpoint High senior Taylor Mire is tied for third after shooting two birdies and 10 pars en route to a 4-over-par 79 and the Lady Bulldogs currently sit in third place out of nine teams with a total score of 353 strokes.

Out of 49 golfers, Demi Driggs, who shot seven pars, sits in 19th for Sandpoint with a 90. Claire Loutezenhiser and Alexa Tuinstra sit in 21st with 92's and Raegan Samuels is tied for 28th with a score of 99. Loutzenhiser, Tuinstra, and Samuels all had one birdie each.

Sandpoint High head coach Mike Deprez said the girls didn't meet their own first round goals and expectations, but are aware of the fact that their a much different team than last year — a team that knows they have the ability to still move up a spot on the final round.

"Twins Falls has a reasonably healthy lead, but it's not insurmountable, especially with how the girls have been playing lately," coach Deprez said.

On the boys' side, Sandpoint High junior Logan Roos is tied for 38th out 63 golfers, carding an eagle, a birdie and six pars en route to 13-over-par 85. Micah Young (86) and Bode Eacret (87) both had two birdies and sit tied for 42nd and 48th, respectively. Everett Gilman, who also had a birdie, is tied for 51st with a score of 88 while Cooper Zimmerman is in 61st with a 94.

"The fast greens are really getting to them, but we know two things... that this is a learning experience and that, well, golf's hard," coach Deprez said. "It always has been and always will be. Hopefully our boys will take what they learned today and apply it to tomorrow."

Coach Deprez said that he is very proud of both of his teams for playing all 18 holes and never quitting and believes they'll do the same today.

The state tournament resumes at 9 a.m. (MST) at the River's Edge Golf Course in Burley.
