MOSES LAKE — Every year, the Grant County Fair gives out the Christopher Harper Memorial Heart and Hustle Award. Harper, 5 years old and battling his second round of cancer, was determined to show a steer.

“He loved life, cattle and anyone around him – we called him our little cowboy,” Colton Dockins, the presenter of the award said.

At the Junior Angus Association show, two weeks before the Grant County Fair, Harper showed his brother’s steer. Then, a couple weeks later at the Grant County Fair, Harper showed a cow and calf pair.

“He was over the moon about it, he was so happy and did anything he could to show a steer,” Dockins said. “He did not give up on his dreams regardless of his cancer.”

Harper died on Dec. 20, 2004. One year later, the Grant County Fair began presenting the Cristopher Harper Memorial Heart and Hustle Award, in memory of Harper.

According to Dockins, the award goes to someone that shows the same heart and hustle as Harper. This year the award went to Makenna Harris.

“I am just really happy,” Harris said.
