Everyone is invited to come dancing Thursdays at the Seniors Hospitality Center with lessons ahead of the dance. The community family event is open to all ages and is presented by the Bonners Ferry Steppers.  

The lessons and dance are organized and run by Dennis Freeman.  

“I just want to dance,” Freeman said of why he started the event. “I’m retired and I need exercise.” 

Freeman has been dancing for 25 years, an interest that began when a woman he met in 1990 at Redondo Beach, Calif., asked if he wanted to dance. Through her he discovered dance at 35 years old, prompting him to take classes for many years. He continued to dance for 25 years and then quit for 15. 

“And now I’m back,” Freeman said.  

Freeman has big vision for both the lessons and the dance hall, hoping that the attendees will continue to grow and even discussed the possibility of starting a competitive dance team for high school age dancers in the future. 

The event is open to both couples and singles. Those without a partner are encouraged to attend, as partners are usually rotated. Freeman explained that the rotation of partners helps dancers learn how to lead.  

The types of dance include country-style two-step, waltz, cha-cha, nightclub two-step, West Coast swing, couples' dances like the horseshoe and the Desperado wrap, and various line dances for all to enjoy. Requests for other dance styles will also be considered. 

Freeman said there are many benefits to dancing regardless of an individual’s age, including socialization, exercise, and building confidence.  

"It's kind of like flying," Freeman said about dancing and confidence. "You know, flying is a great endeavor in that it challenges you in so many different ways and creates a confidence in you. You wouldn't think that dance would do that."  

The lessons begin before the dance with couples' lessons from 5-6 p.m. and are $5 per person. Line dancing lessons are from 6-6:30 p.m. and are no cost. The dance is from 6-9 p.m. and is $5 per person.  

No alcohol is permitted as it is a family-friendly event.  

The Senior Hospitality Center is located at 6655 Lincoln St. in Bonners Ferry. 

Freeman also wanted to bring attention to fellow dance class participants at the fairgrounds Memorial Hall. These lessons are Monday nights, where the East Coast swing and Virginia Reel, along with similar style lessons, are taught.
