SAGLE — The American Red Cross of the Northwest Region is welcoming a handful of residents at its emergency shelter at Sagle Elementary in response to the growth of the Sunset Fire in southwest Bonner County.

The shelter is offering a warm meal, cots and volunteers to talk about the situation. Abby Walker, the communications manager for the American Red Cross Northwest Region, said that the shelter is there to provide immediate relief for anyone affected by the fire.

"It’s a place for anyone who needs a safe place to go,” Walker said. “For safety and emotional support, get a warm meal and make sure that those immediate needs are being taken care of in a disaster.”

Walker said that the organization’s volunteers are working in shifts to cover all hours of the day. These volunteers jumped into action overnight Aug. 13 and got the entire shelter set up at the school.

"Our volunteers are ready to answer a call 24/7,” Walker said. “We work really closely with emergency management to make sure we are identifying the best place in the community and making sure we get all our equipment and volunteers there.”

The fire moved quickly across southern Bonner County, burning 1,400 acres, destroying three structures and forcing evacuation orders for residents on Raven, Crosswhite, Sunset and Little Blacktail roads, according to the Idaho Department of Lands. Walker said that as of Aug. 14, there are five people at the emergency shelter.

"People can stop in, they don’t have to stay there,” Walker said. “They can stop in for a meal, charge their phone, grab a cup of coffee.”

The Red Cross is encouraging all those evacuating to bring any prescription medication, extra clothing, pillows, important documents and other comfort items. Walker said that if evacuation orders are implemented that safety is the highest priority and that residents should listen to local authorities before they decide what to do.

Any evacuated cows and horses can be taken to the Bonner County fairgrounds in Sandpoint, the IDL said.

Walker said that for those looking to support the Red Cross, they are looking for more volunteers and that they are hosting a training session next weekend in Spokane. Those interested can also make a donation to the American Red Cross Northwest Region.

The shelter will remain at Sagle Elementary for as long as emergency management officials say is necessary, according to Walker.

"We will stay there as long as we are needed,” Walker said. “As long as the evacuation is in place, as long as people need a safe place to stay, we will stay open for them.”
