SANDPOINT — The City Council unanimously confirmed the appointment of Meri Jane Bohn as the next city clerk on Wednesday evening.
Bohn will take over from long time Melissa Ward, who recently retired. Mayor Jeremy Grimm said Bohn brings a wealth of experience working in all sizes of government, most recently serving as the city clerk and treasurer for the city of Tonasket, Washington.
In addition to her position at Tonasket, Bohn has worked as a utility bill specialist in Rathdrum and a utility billing analyst in Kent, Washington.
“She's had the opportunity to work in places where she was the cook, chef, bottle washer and garbage person,” Grimm said. “I couldn't be more excited to have such a qualified candidate fill in for this position that became open due to a retirement of Melissa Ward... they're big shoes to fill the incredibly important and critical role at the city.”
Grimm referred to the clerk position as the “left lobe of the mayor’s heart” and the director of traffic at city hall. He said Bohn’s positive attitude and ability to remain calm in the interview was why she stood out to him as a candidate for the position.
As clerk, Bohn is responsible for a wide range of activities for the city including public records requests, human resources issues and meeting agendas and minutes. Grimm said one of her key responsibilities will be communicating with the mayor and department directors on issues and the context in the city.
“We're not a big city, so we like to think that we treat people with a sort of white glove service,” Grimm said. "She's worked in small communities where it's not just faceless citizens... she has a great attitude and a can-do spirit that isn't frazzled and at the same time, isn't dramatic about things."
Bohn was also appointed as the city’s risk manager, which aligns with much of her city clerk duties. Grimm said Bohn is only the fourth city clerk in 40 years for Sandpoint and that her start on Thursday marks a new chapter for City Hall.
“This is a big step, a new chapter,” Grimm said. “Couldn't be more excited to have Meri Jane leading this effort, and thankful that we were able to find someone with their qualifications and experience.”
