WALLACE — Beneath the hum of traffic on Interstate 90, one of Wallace’s most distinctive traditions is set to return this Labor Day weekend: the Under the Freeway Flea Market. 

Now in its third decade, the event has grown into a cornerstone of the holiday weekend, drawing thousands of visitors and supporting the Northern Pacific Railroad Depot Museum alongside the town’s Depot Days celebration. 

Museum Director Kathy Harper, who also organizes the flea market, said more than 100 vendors will set up shop in the shaded stretch under the freeway overpass, offering everything from vintage clothing and handmade jewelry to firearms and furniture. 

Browsers will find collectables, firearms, handmade jewelry, vintage clothing, furniture and plenty of food options on site, Harper said. Downtown businesses will be open for shopping and dining as well.

The market has seen crowds as large as 10,000 in past years, and Harper is optimistic about another strong turnout. After being temporarily relocated to downtown Wallace last year due to construction on the Sixth Street Bridge, the event is returning to its original location.

“For 20 years, the Idaho State Parks have granted permission to use this portion of the Trail for the Flea Market,” Harper said. 

Visitors can also take a short walk to the nearby Northern Pacific Railroad Museum for a tour.

The Under the Freeway Flea Market opens at 6 p.m. Friday and runs through 2 p.m. Monday. The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes will remain open to foot and bicycle traffic throughout the event.
