EPHRATA – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a volunteer outside of active law enforcement to serve on its independent use-of-force investigative team.

“The independent investigation teams that look into police use of force in Washington state are required under state law to have, as part of that investigation group, two community representatives who represent different parts of the community so there’s a mix of different perspectives,” GCSO Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman said.

Generally, the group examines incidents wherein a law enforcement officer operating within any jurisdiction in Grant County uses force and that leads to an injury or death, he said. During the initial portion of the investigation and inquiry, the volunteers would need to be available for about three to six hours to be informed about the investigation. Afterward, they would meet once a week to look at the progress in the investigation. The idea is to ensure the investigation is fair and thorough and no officers investigating the incident have conflicts of interest and similar goals.

“They review evidence and receive weekly updates on the progress of the investigation,” Foreman said.

The representatives examine cases countywide from all departments and work to ensure the integrity of the investigation is protected to ensure the community can trust the results, Foreman said.

Awareness helps prevent porch pirates’ success

EPHRATA — At least 58 million packages were stolen in the U.S. last year, with about 25% of Americans being the victims of theft, according to the United States Parcel Service. At the local level, there are thefts occurring regularly as well, but that doesn’t mean that you’re stuck being the victim, authorities say. “The experience of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office is that package theft happens regularly,” said GCSO Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman. “It is a crime of opportunity. When someone’s out looking to try and make a quick buck, they may drive through a neighborhood looking for unattended packages on the front porch.”

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: In appreciation of educators ...

An experience I recently had with a school district, quite honestly, has left me gob-smacked a bit. I am in awe of the teachers and administrators at school districts throughout the region and what they have to deal with. Let me get back to the beginning, though. Journalists often cover a wide variety of topics and are constantly looking for ideas for stories that will matter to readers. As such, when we hear of events of interest, we sometimes ask to attend so we can either cover it, or, as in this case, learn how to cover a topic better.
