PREP ROUNDUP: Bonners Ferry boys down Coeur d'Alene for 35th straight win

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 31, 2025 10:10 PM

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bonners Ferry 71, Coeur d'Alene 52

COEUR d'ALENE — At North Idaho College, senior Asher Williams had a game-high 28 points, junior Sulay Abubakari pitched in 16 and the visiting Badgers extended their winning streak to 35 games on Friday with a non-league win over the 6A Vikings.

Senior Brody Rice contributed 14 points and sophomore Peyton Hinthorn had nine for Bonners Ferry, which led 33-21 at halftime and closed the game on a 17-5 run.

“We really prepared trying to defend Caden (Symons) and Kai’s (Wheeler) screen and roll,” Bonners Ferry head coach Nathan Williams said. “It really frustrated me to see Kai with eight in the first half, so I harped about taking away his left and Caden had a great second half. We wanted to execute our stuff and they stopped some of our basic sets, but our kids are really good and senior-heavy. They’ve played more basketball than any other team in this region and have a lot of games together.”

Coeur d’Alene beat Lewiston 63-47 in its last game Tuesday in Lewiston. Bonners Ferry beat Lewiston earlier this year by a score of 58-55 in the first round of the Avista Holiday Tournament held at Lewis-Clark State College.

“I watched Coeur d’Alene at Lewiston the other night, and felt the offensive boards could have killed us tonight,” Williams said. “We really just pounded those things. I’m just really proud of our kids. We had four kids that have been sick all week, so we just went over stuff mentally and Arnold did a good job and started pressing us, and I would have done the same thing.”

Bonners Ferry (18-0, 1-0) will look to keep things rolling Wednesday when they travel to Priest River.
