Paw-sitive saving adoption event at Umpqua Bank on Friday

MOSES LAKE — On Friday, Umpqua Bank will host the "Paw-sitive Savings Adoption Event" to help Grant County Animal Outreach find loving homes for local pets in need. The event will feature six to seven adoptable dogs, with discounted adoption fees aimed at encouraging attendees to adopt.
Cyndle Miller, the manager of GCAO, expressed her gratitude towards Umpqua Bank for their initiative.
"Umpqua came to us and actually wanted to do this adoption event, which was awesome because they have such a central location,” she said. “Everyone knows that animal overpopulation is a pressing issue, and the need for finding homes for these wonderful animals is ever-growing."
Miller said it is hard to announce what dogs will be at the event because they have had multiple adoptions this week, including two long-term residents that she was planning on bringing to the event.
The event will include more than just adoption opportunities. Umpqua Bank will also host a food truck, with part of the proceeds supporting the shelter.
Additionally, a donation drive will be conducted to collect essential supplies such as food, toys, and cleaning items that will benefit the animal outreach efforts.
"Any kind of food is always welcome—cat food, dog food," Miller said. "We want to make sure all the animals have full bellies.”
She also said the shelter has the need for hard chew toys to help the animals relieve their stress, as many have faced difficult pasts.
Miller highlighted the importance of adopting long-term residents.
“Every animal that comes through our door needs to find love, respect, and care because that's what they give to their people,” she said.
Miller urged prospective pet owners to consider adopting from the shelter instead of purchasing from breeders.
"All our animals come fully vetted, which means they're spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped,” she said. “They just want a bowl of food, a belly rub, and someone to hang out with."
Miller said she would like to give a special shout-out to the shelter’s assistant manager, Cerena Jewell, for always working hard and helping organize this event.
The event is expected to be filled with "a lot of wiggles and love," Miller said, as she encouraged the community to seek their "forever buddy."

4th-year drought declaration in WA, subtle effects in the Columbia Basin
EPHRATA — Washington’s fourth straight year of drought is expected to hit some regions hard, but in Grant and Adams counties, the impacts will look different – quieter, less visible and centered underground. Statewide, the Department of Ecology issued an emergency drought declaration after a warm winter left Washington with about half its usual snowpack, raising concerns about low summer streamflows, stressed fish populations and heightened wildfire risk. Seven of the past 10 years have included drought somewhere in the state. “If you look at our mountains, the challenge we are facing is clear,” Gov. Bob Ferguson said during a press conference Wednesday. “We’re taking emergency action to protect fish, farmers and communities across Washington.”
Sleep Diagnostic Center to close after doctor’s sentencing
MOSES LAKE — The Central Washington Sleep Diagnostic Center announced it will be closing its doors effective April 30. This includes locations in Moses Lake, Spokane Valley, Brewster and Wenatchee. The announcement follows the March 25 guilty plea from Dr. Eric Edward Haeger, 57, in United States District Court to adulterating and misbranding medical devices with the intent to defraud or mislead, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “The adulterations by Dr Haeger show a dangerous disregard for the safety of his patients,” Washington Attorney General Nick Brown said in a statement. “This is a win for patient safety, for protecting public dollars from fraud, and for ensuring citizens of Washington get necessary healthcare. This case exemplifies the great work our team is doing in collaboration with our federal partners to fight fraud and protect Washingtonians.”
