COEUR D’ALENE — A Montana man driving a stolen vehicle led law enforcement on a multi-county high-speed chase earlier this week, law enforcement officials say. 

Jacob Harteis, 34, was arrested Monday afternoon after police used road spikes and a precision immobilization technique, commonly referred to as a PIT maneuver, to bring the chase to an end.  

According to Capt. Seth Green with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, the chase began in Shoshone County after the office received reports of a suspected drunken driver on Interstate 90. Deputies attempted to initiate a stop near Pinehurst, but Harteis allegedly refused to comply and continued west toward Coeur d’Alene.  

During this time, deputies say they discovered the 2005 Honda Civic that Harteis was driving had been reported stolen out of Missoula earlier in the day.  

Troopers with the Idaho State Police and Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office joined in the chase, pursuing Harteis over Fourth of July Pass and into Coeur d’Alene, where he was finally stopped and apprehended near the intersection of Homestead Avenue and 15th Street.  

No injuries or damage associated with the chase were reported.  

In Kootenai County, Harteis has been charged with grand theft, eluding an officer, driving without privileges, driving under the influence and providing false information.  

According to Green, along with any additional charges from Montana, Harteis will face felony eluding charges in Shoshone County.

Harteis remains in the Kootenai County jail.
