EPHRATA — St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church is once again uniting its community for a noble cause. On April 16, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Young Ladies Institute and Knights of Columbus will collaborate to host a blood drive at the Ephrata Recreation Center. This annual event aims to bolster the local blood supply, which is persistently in high demand.

“This partnership has been going strong for over 30 years,” said Jane Montaney, a member of the Young Ladies Institute. “We’ve always believed in the importance of giving back, and this blood drive perfectly encapsulates the spirit of community service that defines our organizations.”

The collaboration not only strengthens community bonds but also highlights the pressing need for blood donations, she said, as the Red Cross serves as the primary source of blood for various medical needs, including emergency surgeries and transfusions.

As part of their initiative to encourage donors, those who donate blood, platelets or AB Elite plasma during the drive will receive a complimentary classic Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.

“It’s a small token of appreciation that we hope will motivate more people to come out and donate,” Montaney said.

Additionally, all blood donors in April will be automatically entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. For those interested, further details regarding the contest can be found at RedCrossBlood.org/Hope.

The Ephrata Recreation Center has become a familiar venue for blood drives, often hosting similar events to cater to community needs.

“We encourage everyone to come out and donate, whether you schedule an appointment or decide to walk in,” Montaney explained. “It’s important for everyone to understand that each donation can make a significant difference.”

She said potential donors should prepare for their blood donation by adopting a healthy diet in the lead-up to the event.

“Did you know that orange juice is a good source of iron? It’s a simple way to prepare your body for giving blood," she said.

For those wanting to secure a spot in advance, appointments can be made by calling 1-800-733-2767 or visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering “EphrataCommunity.” While pre-scheduling is strongly encouraged to help streamline the process, walk-ins are also welcome.

Montaney, reflecting on the significance of donating blood, shared a personal story that underscores its impact.

“My eldest daughter underwent several surgeries and required multiple blood transfusions,” she said. “At one point, the amount of blood she needed exceeded what a normal body holds as she lost it just as quickly as it was administered. If it weren’t for the generosity of blood donors, she might not have received the care she needed.”

The blood drive is not only an opportunity to give blood, she said, but also a place for community members to come together and support one another. After donating, participants can enjoy a complimentary lunch, ensuring they replenish their energy post-donation.

“We want everyone who donates to feel appreciated and cared for,” Montaney said. “Our goal is not just to collect blood; it’s to foster a strong sense of community.”

Both organizations are committed to raising awareness about the ongoing need for blood donations.

“Every bit counts, and we urge everyone in the community to think about how they can help,” Montaney said. “It’s a small commitment of time that can mean so much to someone in need.”

Measles reported in Grant County

EPHRATA — Grant County health officials are urging families to check their vaccination records after two unvaccinated children in the same household tested positive for measles, marking the county’s first confirmed infections of 2026. Grant County Health District said it was notified on March 17 that both children, who were recently exposed during international travel, had contracted the virus. One child was briefly hospitalized; both are now recovering at home. Health Officer Dr. Alexander Brzezny said the cases underscore how quickly measles can spread — and how effectively it can be prevented.
