OSBURN — The Shoshone County Democratic Committee submitted three names for consideration for the open position of Shoshone County sheriff following a meeting Tuesday night at the Osburn Fire Hall.
Spike Angle, William Eddy and Chris Rice were the party's top choices after hearing from eight candidates, including John Richter, Lance Stutzke, Seth Green, Scott Ross and Doug Zeigler.
The candidates were allotted three minutes each to discuss their backgrounds and why they thought they could fill the position, followed by a brief question-and-answer period, during which the voting members of the Democratic Committee could ask questions.
Following the forum, the committee used a ranked choice voting method to determine its top three candidates.
Originally, Green was selected as one of the three options but was later ruled ineligible after failing to meet the time of residency requirements within Shoshone County.
All three men chosen by the committee have prior experience in law enforcement.
Angle, 71, worked his way up to the rank of captain at the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office before leaving to take the position of chief of police for the city of Osburn, where he retired after 17 years.
Eddy has several decades of law enforcement experience, primarily with the Pinehurst Police Department.
Rice, 52, previously worked at the Kellogg Police Department, the SCSO, and the Post Falls Police Department. He also previously served as a school resource officer.
The Shoshone County commissioners have 15 days from the time they receive the list to decide; otherwise, the decision reverts to the committee to make a determination.
At this time, no meeting has been scheduled by the commissioners to review the candidates.
The opening for sheriff came about when former sheriff Holly Lindsey resigned two weeks ago after being involved in a hit-and-run accident while off-duty in a personal vehicle in Osburn.
The incident is under investigation by the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
