KELLOGG — The Kellogg Elks, in partnership with Silver Valley CARES, has opened a community food pantry in a cabinet outside the Elks' lodge building to help residents struggling with food insecurity. The pantry operates on a simple principle: “Leave what you can, take what you need.” 

Organizers say the goal is to provide basic nutritional options as local families face mounting challenges from rising grocery prices and strained resources. The pantry will also accept donations of blankets, socks, hats, gloves, coats, hygiene items and first-aid kits. 

“This is about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Carol Young, past exalted ruler of the Kellogg Elks. “We know the holidays can be especially hard for families, and this pantry is one way to show that our community cares.” 

The initiative comes as food insecurity rates in North Idaho remain among the highest in the state. According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap report, about 14.7% of residents in North and North Central Idaho are food insecure, including 21% of children. Shoshone County, where Kellogg is located, has one of the highest rates at 16.6% overall and nearly 25% among children. 

Local food banks are bracing for increased demand during the holiday season, compounded by recent delays in SNAP benefits and inflation-driven price hikes. Some Idaho pantries have reported double the usual demand, with one organization distributing more than 420 food boxes in 10 days, twice last year’s numbers. Grocery costs have surged statewide, with staples like eggs and meat seeing sharp increases due to supply chain disruptions and disease outbreaks.  

Silver Valley CARES, whose mission is to promote mental health and resilience, says the pantry reflects its commitment to reducing stigma and empowering individuals to seek help. The Elks, known for supporting youth, veterans and charitable causes, view the project as part of their ongoing community service.
