KELLOGG — This weekend marks the sixth annual Jackass Half Marathon, and organizers are calling on locals to help make this year’s event one to remember. 

Each year, the 13.1-mile race draws hundreds of runners from across the country. 

“What began as a small, local event to encourage outdoor activity and showcase the beauty of the Silver Valley has grown into a nationally recognized race, now at full capacity with 700 registered runners,” said Tara Lodi, a member of the organizing team through the Silver Valley Chamber of Commerce. 

Organizers hope to spotlight the dedicated volunteers who have helped grow the race into a major community event. 

“Volunteers here don’t just show up, they show out,” Lodi said. “They bring costumes, music, signs and unmatched enthusiasm. Runners tell us it’s the encouragement along the way that gets them through 13.1 miles.” 

That energy is especially important in the final miles of the race. 

In 2024, RaceRaves named the Jackass Half Marathon the best in Idaho, citing its scenic location, strong organization, ideal timing, affordable registration, and fun medals and swag. 

“If the race-day equivalent of a group hug sounds appealing, you’re sure to embrace Jackass,” RaceRaves wrote. 

Organizers hope to recreate that same spirit this year. 

“We love getting the whole community involved, including local students from ROTC, leadership classes and shop class, with the goal of integrating youth into some of our bigger community events,” Lodi said. “To keep youth engaged, we offer three scholarships per year with a heavy emphasis on volunteering, as well as inviting them to the Silver Valley Chamber’s annual Volunteer Recognition Party.” 

All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, lunch and a chance to win raffle prizes. A highlight reel will be filmed this year to capture the fun, spirit and creativity of the volunteer crew. 

Residents along the route are encouraged to set up chairs in their yards, wave and cheer on runners as they pass. Volunteers are still being recruited for those who want to play a bigger role.

The Jackass Half Marathon takes place Saturday, Oct. 4. The race begins in Wallace and finishes in uptown Kellogg.
