Organizers launch fundraising for 250th Fourth of July in Bonners Ferry

BONNERS FERRY — Fundraising is underway for the city’s Fourth of July celebration as the nation prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
The annual event, coordinated locally by John Becker and a team of volunteers, aims to give residents a fun and meaningful way to celebrate without leaving town.
“We do it to support the community and to provide something fun and exciting that locals don’t have to travel out of town for,” Becker said.
This year’s celebration will include several additions in recognition of the 250th anniversary. Becker said organizers are expanding the fireworks display this year and are currently seeking a headlining band for the event.
Additional programming will highlight local and national history. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will host informational booths and presentations throughout the afternoon and will lead the closing ceremonies.
The Boundary County Library will host a community reading of “1776” throughout the early summer. On July 8, the Boundary County Museum, in partnership with county officials, will present a public reading of the Declaration of Independence along with historical exhibits.
The fundraising goal for this year is $25,000. Becker said the funds go directly toward producing the celebration, including fireworks, entertainment and event-related expenses.
Organizers noted that putting together a large community event comes with significant costs and relies heavily on public support.
Projected expenses for the event include approximately $15,000 for fireworks, $900 for ignitors, $1,150 for portable restrooms, $3,500 for insurance, $1,000 for equipment repairs and upgrades, $500 for miscellaneous costs such as permits and volunteer support, and about $5,000 for bands and entertainment.
Despite careful budgeting in past years, Becker emphasized the importance of broader community participation to sustain and grow the event.
“Thousands of people come to enjoy the afternoon and evening, yet we receive donations from maybe a dozen individuals throughout the year,” he said. “Even small donations from a large volume of people would really make a difference in what we are capable of doing.”
If fundraising falls short, Becker said organizers have maintained a reserve fund to help offset costs but are personally committed to ensuring the event continues.
“We have been fiscally responsible for the past few years and have been able to keep a fund in the bank to cover a shortfall,” he said. “If we were to fall that short for some reason, then I pay for it out of my pocket.”
The event is entirely funded through community support, with no paid staff involved.
“This event is not funded by the city or county,” Becker said. “It is paid for by the community. 100% of all donations go to putting the event together.”
Community members can support the effort through donations or by volunteering. Organizers are seeking help with planning, fundraising, event setup and post-event cleanup.
A fundraising booth will be set up at Super 1 Foods on May 22 to accept donations in person.
