On Tuesday, Outpost Brewing released its exclusive “Who Run the World IPA," a new brew in conjunction with the Pink Boots Society.
It was a hit.
Patrons called it “fruity," "delicious" and said it “has bite."
Some thought it represented more.
“This beer emulates everything the Pink Boots Society stands for," Kerry Kiernes said. “It's bright and showcases the beauty of the hops. The flavor profiles that come out are not simplistic, and it showcases the individual flavors as the beer warms up and you take sip after sip after sip.”
Owners and operators Chelsey and Dan Borgstrom worked with hop and grain suppliers to use products that give a percentage of sales back to the PBS.
The Pink Boots Society, dedicated to advancing the careers of women in the brewing and fermentation industry, was founded in 2007.
“This community is overflowing with talent in our industry,” Chelsey Borgstrom said, "So much passion, intelligence, kindness and like-minded people who constantly come together to help one another out and lift each other up."
Breweries across the world participate in collective brew days to raise funds and awareness for the cause. These brews frequently use a special hop blend created specifically for the initiative.
Outpost Brewing's contribution this year was a limited-release beer they believe represents the cause.
They brewed an India Pale Ale using a light pilsner malt and a special hops selection.
“You should taste notes of bubble gum, tropical fruit and fruit loops,” Chelsey said.
Her husband, Dan, who brews for the company, worked alongside his wife to support the PBS.
“When beer can be used as an instrument of change, of providing a voice to something, to working with other business owners in the area, I just love that and if you have the opportunity to do something you should just do it," he said.
Other local business owners and representatives involved included Jenn Drake of the Crown and Thistle Pub, TJ Taylor of Ten/6, Lyndie Black-Crespin of Brewscape, Chelsea Boss of SeaBoss Marketing, Lexia Martin of Vantage Point Brewing Company and Kerry Kiernes of Paragon Brewing.
"We all learn and grow from one another, and it's really cool to be a part of," Chelsey said. "We have accomplished so much as an industry, and we don't see that stopping.”
