Winter is often considered a “slow” season for tourist destinations — but that’s not necessarily the case in North Idaho.

Bonner and Shoshone counties rank among the state’s top ski destinations, placing third and fifth, respectively, in Ski Idaho’s most recent (2023/24) report. Bonner County is home to Schweitzer, while Silver Mountain Resort and Lookout Pass are both located in Shoshone County.

According to Ski Idaho, statewide skier spending topped out at $402 million in winter 2023-24, about half of which was spent outside of the resorts themselves — great news for small businesses in surrounding communities.

Ski Idaho also reported that taxable lodging sales, which apply to short-term stays and are distinct from general sales taxes, have more than doubled since 2016/'17 in Bonner, Shoshone, and other leading ski counties.

Recent data from the Idaho Travel Council suggests taxable lodging sales continue to boost North Idaho’s economy year-round.

In February, the five northern counties — Kootenai, Shoshone, Bonner, Boundary and Benewah — collected nearly $221,000 in lodging taxes, a 1.54% increase over last February’s total.

The impact of Idaho’s ski industry reaches far beyond the slopes. Ski Idaho estimates the industry contributes roughly $1 billion annually, accounting for about 8% of the state’s total travel economy.

Broader tourism trends reinforce that impact. Data from Visit Idaho shows the industry generated $1.25 billion in direct travel spending across the region in 2023.

Tourism also plays a major role in the local workforce. In 2023, tourism-related employment surpassed 13,000 jobs, making up about 8% of total employment across Kootenai, Shoshone, Bonner, Boundary and Benewah counties.

While ski resorts generate hundreds of seasonal jobs during the winter months, regional attractions like Silverwood Theme Park become key employers as the weather warms.

Interviewing has already begun for the 2026 season, public relations manager Sara Meddock said, and the park is always accepting applications.

“We are excited to welcome both new and familiar faces back to the park,” Meddock said.

Statewide, tourism is Idaho’s third-largest industry, behind agriculture and technology.
