Beauty and the bus

The Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission is looking to encourage use of Citylink and create beauty at the same time.
“We have limited roads and they aren’t getting any bigger, they are getting more crowded,” said Lynn Fleming, who gave a presentation to the commission Tuesday. “I have seen how people use metros and it brings together community.”
Fleming proposed bus stop art and architecture as a way of luring motorists toward the public buses as well as a way to enhance local aesthetics.
Better signage and seats, weather guards and more were discussed, all to be implemented with an artful tinge.
“We can have identifiable art dotting the city,” she said.
Citylink serves Coeur d’Alene, Dalton Gardens, Hayden, Huetter, Post Falls as well as several routes onto and throughout the Coeur d’Alene Reservation.
The program also provides paratransit services for people with ADA-eligible limitations. There is no cost to ride Citylink buses.
The arts commission liked what they had heard. A four-member Arts Commission subcommittee has been formed to assist and discuss matters related to the project.
They also discussed getting local artists to take part, including commissions and student competitions.
Fleming sees getting “proper busing” to the area as an important issue as well as a way of spreading art and architecture across the city.
“We can get art to everyone, not just a select few,” she said.
