Building confidence, encouraging self-esteem and inspiring children to dream big. That's the goal of Josh and Katie Terra, owners of Momentum Sports and Play at 3877 N. Schreiber Way in Coeur d'Alene. 

"We are a children's activity center focused on gymnastics, ninja, tumbling, cheerleading and preschool programs," Katie said. "We strive to provide the highest level of quality in each of our classes and events, and top-notch customer service to all of our families." 

Katie has been teaching gymnastics since she was 16. She later became an elementary school teacher. 

The variety of programs taught at Momentum Sports and Play is for toddlers to kids 8 years old and up. 

"Our preschool program offers classes for kiddos from walking to age 5," Katie said. "They learn fundamental gymnastics skills and build strength and coordination, while having a ton of fun."  

The recreational gymnastics program is for kids aged 5 to 8. 

"As gymnasts progress, they are invited to move up to the next class level," Katie said. "Our highest level is PreComp, where gymnasts learn routines on each apparatus to prepare for mock meets. 

Their cheer program for ages 5 and up offers exhibition cheerleading teams and a competitive team that performs at local competitions.  

"The goal of our cheer program is to provide a fun cheer experience that focuses on the whole child and is specific to their age and development," Katie said. 

Tumbling classes for 6-year-olds and up at Momentum Sports and Play teach kids bridges, roundoffs and handstands, back walkovers and back handsprings, back tucks, layouts and twisting. 

Josh oversees the Momentum Ninjas tumbling-based parkour program with class options for ages 3 to 5 (Little Ninjas and Mighty Ninjas), and ages 6 and up. The curriculum includes skills in multiple disciplines: parkour, tumbling, tricking, strength and character. 

"I started the class at the gym we used to work at in Central Valley, Calif. There was kind of a stigma around boys gymnastics there. So, I thought we could do something a little different, like boys gymnastics with a mask," Josh said. "I came from a parkour, running background along with tumbling and martial arts. So, I thought we could incorporate all of that into one program. We wouldn't teach martial arts — but we'd teach the foundations — to get better kicks — better hip strength and flexibility." 

In addition to the gymnastic and cheer classes, Katie and Josh also teach the kids STEM classes. 

"I have an elementary school teaching background. Josh was a mechanical engineer at an aerospace company," Katie said. "He teaches the kids coding, robotics, 3D Modeling and Printing and how to work with drones." 

Momentum Sports and Play is open Monday through Friday. 

"We have a morning session at 9:45 a.m. that ends at noon, and then we reopen at 2:45 and close around 7:15," Katie said.
