OLYMPIA — Twin sisters from Moses Lake served as Washington legislative pages, one in the state Senate and one in the state House of Representatives, for a week in January.  

Abigail Shearer worked as a page for 13th District Representative Tom Dent, while her sister Elisabeth was a page for 13th District Senator Judy Warnick. 

“I am grateful for Abigail’s service during her week in Olympia,” Dent said in a press release from the Washington State House Republicans. “I hope she will stay engaged in the legislative process. It is important for our young people to be active in our government at all levels and help shape the future of our communities.” 

“It was a pleasure to have Elisabeth serve as a page in the Senate,” Warnick said. “I appreciate her service and am happy she was able experience the legislative process in this way.” 

The sisters are the daughters of Craig and Crystal Shearer of Moses Lake. 

“The page program is an excellent way for students to learn how our state government operates,” Dent said, and Warnick echoed that sentiment. 

“The page program is a special part of the Legislature which allows students to become acquainted with the legislative process in our state and enables them to see how laws governing the people come into being,” Warnick said. 

Students who apply for the page program must be between 14 and 16 years of age and have a legislative sponsor. Pages are required to get written permission from their families and school. They’re paid while they’re working, receiving $65 per day in the House and $67 per day in the Senate.
