It was a tumultuous weekend for Lake County’s Class C teams. Two Eagle River shone with its two wins across both boys and girls games, while Charlo picked up just one over their four total games.

Let’s see how close these teams got and where they ultimately made the most impact.

Two Eagle River Girls 57, Valley Christian Girls 52

First, the Two Eagle River Lady Eagles had a barnburner on Jan. 29 against the Valley Christian Lady Eagles. In a battle fought in the skies, it was one that Two Eagle River had to win.

It was a strong start for Two Eagle River, and despite the early lead getting chipped away slowly, the girls stayed strong. Valley Christian needed magic in the fourth quarter, but it was never enough to slow Two Eagle River's eventual win.

Keke Tenas again led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 18 points. The girls now sit at 3-5 in 14C, holding onto the fourth-place spot.

Two Eagle River Boys 71, Valley Christian Boys 57

The boys also had a good win this week against the Valley Christian Eagles on Jan. 29.

It was another high-scoring affair for Two Eagle River. Despite being up only two points going into halftime, they poured on 25 points in the third quarter. That total and Valley Christian’s game-low scoring in the third led to Two Eagle River’s eventual 71-57 win.

Jayvian Burke was the star that night with 23 points and 10 rebounds. That puts the Eagles at 6-1 in the 14C district and firmly in second place behind undefeated St. Regis.

Charlo Girls 56, St. Regis Girls 24

Over to Charlo now, where the boys and girls hosted the St. Regis Tigers on Jan. 30. For the Lady Vikings, it was a blowout.

Charlo allowed the Lady Tigers to score double-digits in only one quarter, with Charlo’s dominant first half being all they needed to secure this 56-24 win. That win helped cap off a streak of five straight wins headed into their next game.

It was another impressive showing for Brielle Zempel, who led Charlo with 17 points on the night.

Troy Girls 61, Charlo Girls 57

It was a tough night on Jan. 31, following up that win against St. Regis, as Charlo took on the Troy Lady Trojans, a Class B school.

Despite the difference in class level, the Lady Vikings put up a fight that yielded a massive 23-10 lead in the first quarter. Both teams battled back and forth in the second and third quarters. Charlo led 53-40 going into the fourth quarter with almost no doubt that they could cap it off.

Unfortunately for the Lady Vikings, the run ended there. A huge 21-point fourth quarter from the Lady Trojans and a game-low four points from the Lady Vikings led to a 61-57 victory for Troy.

Avery Coleman was Charlo’s leader in points with 19. GG Hawk had 12 points as well to help round it out. While that loss drops Charlo to 9-4 on the year, the team still has an 8-1 conference record, holding on to the first seed in 14C.

St. Regis Boys 72, Charlo Boys 42

The Charlo boys also took on St. Regis on Jan. 30 and it was a struggle early against a strong Tigers team.

The Charlo boys only managed two points in the first quarter while St. Regis put up 21. That slow start was all the Tigers really needed to keep their lead. However, a strong 26-point third quarter from St. Regis ultimately sealed the win over the Vikings.

Echo Edwards led Charlo with 13 points while Tasker Brown followed up with 11 of his own.

Troy Boys 57, Charlo Boys 25

The Vikings faced an equally strong opponent on Jan. 31 when they faced the Troy Trojans.

It was another game where Charlo struggled to score throughout, with only one double-digit scoring quarter. The Vikings also allowed Troy to get 25 points in the first quarter. With another huge deficit, it was a long shot for Charlo to find a way out. They only managed 10 total points in the second half, making this one a 57-25 win for Troy.

Both Edwards and Brown led the team in scoring with eight points each. These two losses drop Charlo to 4-10 on the year and they fall to 2-6 in their district after the St. Regis loss. They are firmly in fourth place in 14C.
