Man arrested for stabbing mother gets four-year sentence

A Kalispell man arrested for allegedly stabbing his mother with a plastic pen last spring earned a four-year sentence with the state Department of Corrections in October.
Prosecutors brought Daniel Kenneth Meyer Jr., 22, up on a felony count of assault with a weapon in Flathead County District Court following his May 9 arrest. He pleaded not guilty before Judge Heidi Ulbricht at his May 29 arraignment, but took a deal with prosecutors in September.
In exchange for guilty pleas to amended charges of felony criminal endangerment and partner or family member assault, prosecutors agreed to recommend he receive a four-year sentence for the former and a suspended one-year jail sentence for the latter. Under the terms of the deal, the two sentences would run concurrently and Meyer would need to continue undergoing treatment.
Ulbricht kept to the terms of the agreement at Meyer's Oct. 23 sentencing. She gave him credit for 168 days of time served and ordered him to complete his anger management counseling if placed on community supervision by the Department of Corrections.
Meyer allegedly entered his mother's bedroom on the day of the stabbing and leapt at her with the pen. The victim later told Flathead County Sheriff's Office deputies she was unsure of how many times Meyer stabbed her, but remembered pulling shards of the broken pen from her head, according to court documents.
Another person in the home shoved Meyer outside, but he returned with a pipe and unsuccessfully tried to force his way back inside, court documents said. The authorities were summoned to the home, near the intersection of Jellison Road and U.S. 2, after he gave up and left.
