Another week of Class C basketball offered more opportunities for these teams to prepare for the district tournament next week.
Take a look at how each team did with just a couple of games left in the regular season.
Two Eagle River Boys 66, Superior Boys 54
Two Eagle River had a successful week of basketball, starting with a game against the Superior Bobcats on Feb. 6.
It was a game that needed the Eagles to score and score well, which in the first half was easily accomplished. The Eagles posted 41 points to the Bobcats' 25, all with sound shooting and lockdown defense in the paint.
It was the exact style that the Eagles like to play and Superior allowed it to happen. However, heading into the second half, Superior forced more pressure and turnovers.
The Eagles started slowing down when it came to shooting as Superior kept it close in the third quarter. Superior still couldn’t mount a significant comeback despite their ability to hold the Eagles off.
The Bobcats outscored the Eagles 15-10 in the fourth quarter. Despite some light frustration from the Eagles, they managed to slow the game down a bit and bleed some time. This helped push Two Eagle River to a 66-54 win over Superior.
Talon Addison led all Eagles’ scorers with 25 points, with his brother, Thomas, following up with 11 points.
“We just kind of continued to do our thing,” Talon said. “We are always trying to play team ball, and we're kind of still getting used to that. So as long as we play together and just stay together and play as a team, we'll make it a long way.”
Superior Girls 64, Two Eagle River Girls 47
The girls' first game of their week was a foul-heavy contest against Superior on Feb. 6.
It was a packed house early for this one as the Lady Eagles tried to steal a win late in the regular season before the district tournament. The game started slowly however as they failed to score more than four points while allowing Superior to force turnovers.
After a 16-4 first quarter, the Lady Eagles found their rhythm offensively but still struggled to contain Superior which kept a healthy lead. It was then that Two Eagle River began a trend of fouls. The number of calls on the floor and near the basket killed the Lady Eagles' momentum.
It was 32-19 going into halftime and the Lady Eagles needed a spark. A 17-point third quarter helped but the fouls continued to pile up.
At this point, some of the team's best players were struggling to stay on the court. With early subs coming back just to foul, it seemed improbable that the Lady Eagles could find a way to come back.
Despite multiple players fouling out before the fourth quarter, Two Eagle River trailed 48-36 with a decent run ahead. Again, the fouls eliminated what should’ve been a strong quarter for the Lady Eagles.
Superior kept driving and Two Eagle River kept fouling, leaving the team at one point with only one starter who had not fouled out.
With most of the starting lineup on the bench in crunch time, the game was sealed as the Lady Bobcats won 64-47.
Keke Tenas notched another 20-point game on the season to lead the team in scoring. She was also one of four starters who fouled out at the end of the game.
“Last time we played them, we got beat by a lot, and this time, we picked it up by a lot too,” Tenas said. “After the game, I kind of felt upset, but at the same time, I was happy, because we got crushed last time and this time, we made them work for it.”
Two Eagle River Boys 74, Heart Butte Boys 69 (OT)
The Eagles are not prone to losing close games and that sentiment was the same on Feb. 7 against the Heart Butte Warriors.
It was a high-scoring matchup with Two Eagle River putting up the early 24-13 lead in the first quarter. However, Heart Butte stormed back with a 19-point second quarter. It was 41-32 at halftime and the Warriors were ready to play in the second half.
Despite a strong third quarter from both teams, the Eagles only scored six points in the fourth quarter. The Warriors answered with 17 points and took this game to overtime with a 66-66 score.
The Eagles rallied in overtime with eight points, earning the 74-69 victory.
Jayvian Burke led the team in scoring with 28 points, while fellow senior Ryiley Gates followed that up with 17 points.
These wins put the Eagles at 7-1 in 14C and in second place.
Hot Springs Girls 41, Two Eagle River Girls 40
The Two Eagle girls ended their week with a heartbreaking loss to Hot Springs on Feb. 7.
This was a game that saw the Lady Eagles struggle early, going down 14-6 in the first quarter. However, they rebounded in the second quarter and closed the gap 23-22, only trailing by one.
Another close quarter meant this one was going to come down to the last shot. While the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Savage Heat 13-12 in the final quarter, Two Eagle River fell just short, losing 40-41.
Tenas led her team in scoring with 17 points, adding to her lengthy list of double-digit performances this season.
The two losses now put the Lady Eagles at 3-7 in 14C, landing them in fourth place.
Flathead Valley Home School 63, Charlo Boys 35
Charlo had a non-conference game on Feb. 5 against the Flathead Valley Home School.
This game was close early, with both teams trading blows. Charlo trailed 27-24 with a chance in the second half to push Flathead Valley Home School out of this one. Unfortunately for them, they struggled in the third quarter, only scoring two points while allowing 23 points.
That gap was far too much for the Vikings to overcome as they fell 63-35.
Charlo Girls 67, Hot Springs 32
The Charlo Lady Vikings had a great week of basketball, starting with a win against Hot Springs on Feb. 5.
Charlo has dominated conference opponents and the Lady Savage Heat were no different as the Lady Vikings rolled in the first half. A 24-5 first-quarter lead kicked off what was a lopsided win for Charlo. The Lady Savage Heat could never find a rhythm while the Lady Vikings slowed it down in the second half.
This ultimately gave Charlo the 67-32 win.
Brielle Zempel has another fantastic scoring game with 24 points, while her teammate GG Hawk tacked on 20 points of her own.
Noxon Boys 34, Charlo Boys 29
The Charlo boys had a close loss to close the week out when they took on Noxon Feb. 7
With both teams struggling for wins, this one could equalize the standings. Noxon held on just long enough to keep Charlo away from the win. The Red Devils and Vikings played a defensive game as neither team crossed the 40-point threshold.
However, Noxon took the 34-29 victory to push Charlo into the bottom half of the standings.
The Vikings still sit at fourth in the 14C standings with a 2-6 district record.
Charlo Girls 73, Noxon Girls 12
The Lady Vikings' final game of the week came against the winless Noxon Lady Red Devils.
Charlo was once again the better team, scoring at will and dominating on the defensive end. It was 33-6 after the first quarter with Charlo leading the way from the start. Noxon didn’t score in the second or third quarters of the game, essentially sealing this one with a 73-12 win.
Those wins put Charlo up to 10-1 in 14C as they sit firmly in the number one spot of the district.
