Charlo and Two Eagle River faced back-to-back games this week to close out their regular seasons, with both girls' squads going perfect on the week.
Let’s see where each team finished up before the district tournament from Feb. 19 through Feb. 21 at Linderman Gym in Polson this week.
Charlo Girls 76, Phiipsburg Girls 15
The Charlo girls had a stellar final week of the regular season, starting on Feb. 12 against Philipsburg.
It was a route in the first half with the Lady Vikings leading 56-11 heading into halftime. They held Philipsburg to just two points in the second quarter, putting up one of their more well-rounded efforts of the season.
They never trailed and didn’t even have to score in double-digits to lead, as they only allowed one point in the third quarter and three points in the fourth. Charlo won 76-15.
Brielle Zempel landed an unreal 32 points, adding to her list of shining performances this year. Madison Harris had 13 points and GG Hawk had 12 points to add to the scoring numbers.
Charlo Girls 62, Alberton 17
The Lady Vikings continued their winning ways on Feb. 13 with a lockdown effort against Alberton.
The Lady Panthers struggled to score against a Charlo defense that has looked stout all year. The Lady Vikings also scored well without putting up any insane single-quarter numbers. The consistent play was plenty for Charlo to take the 62-17 win to close out the regular season.
Charlo caps off a stunning 11-1 district season and a 13-4 regular season. This puts the Lady Vikings into first place in 14C and gives them a first-round bye in the district tournament. They will play the winner of Two Eagle River and St. Regis at 3:45 p.m. on Feb. 20.
Philipsburg Boys 59, Charlo Boys 42
It was a tough week for the Charlo boys and it started on Feb. 12 in a game against Philipsburg.
It was a closer affair at first with the Vikings only trailing 15-11 after the first quarter. However, a 22-point second quarter from the Prospectors was the difference in a game that Charlo played closely. Despite the Prospectors dropping off in scoring, the Vikings never caught up.
The Vikings lost out 59-42 to start their week. Echo Edwards led the team in scoring with 17 points on the night.
Alberton Boys 61, Charlo Boys 38
Charlo closed its week out with another tough loss, this time to the Alberton Panthers on the road on Feb. 13.
In a game against a similar caliber opponent, it felt like Charlo had the chance to shake off a seven-game losing streak. Unfortunately, the Vikings staggered against a team they had earned their most recent win against.
Alberton needed a big district victory and it managed to do that on top of one of their better scoring performances of the year. The Vikings couldn’t fight back as they lost 61-38.
Those losses put Charlo firmly in the second-to-last spot of 14C and just ahead of Alberton. The Vikings go up against Noxon in the first round of the 14C district tournament at 7 p.m. on Feb. 19.
Two Eagle River Girls 63, St Regis Girls 40
The girls of Two Eagle River secured potentially their most successful week of the year to close out the regular season with two wins. The first came on Feb. 12 against St. Regis.
The Lady Tigers were looking to dethrone Charlo from the top of 14C but they were going to have to get through a Lady Eagles team that played with a vengeance.
It was a defensive route in the first quarter as Two Eagle River outscored St. Regis 18-0. While St. Regis didn’t struggle much to score for the rest of the game, the Lady Eagles put on one of their stronger offensive performances of the season.
A 21-point third quarter helped seal it for the Lady Eagles as they won 63-40.
It was another Keke Tenas-led game with 22-points from the leading scorer. Emma Spotted Eagle and Jodessa Dickson each notched 11 points in the win.
Two Eagle River Girls 52, Noxon Girls 31
The Lady Eagles closed out their regular season with another convincing win on Feb. 13 against Noxon.
It was another early start for Two Eagle River as they led 31-13 after the first half. As happened in their previous game, the Lady Eagles got off to a hot start, which was all they needed in order to keep their lead throughout the game.
The Lady Red Devils were unable to put up double-digit points until the final quarter. At that point, Two Eagle River had already taken control and secured the 52-31 win.
Tenas led the way with 17 points while Lexis Sparks followed up with 10 points.
Two Eagle River will end the season with a 5-7 district record and 9-9 overall. Now, the Lady Eagles will rematch St. Regis in the first round of the 14C district tournament at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 19.
St. Regis Boys 61, Two Eagle River Boys 44
The Two Eagle River boys had a chance to tie for the number-one seed with a win over St. Regis on Feb. 12 but they were unable to do it.
A low-scoring game for Two Eagle River is never a good sign. The team's dynamic offense stagnated against a Tiger crew looking to claim the top of the district. It was close in the first quarter but the Tigers took a 37-25 lead heading into halftime.
A low-scoring third quarter from both teams sealed it for the Eagles' shot at the top, as they went on to lose this one 61-44 for just their second conference loss of the year.
Ryiley Gates led the team with 15 points while teammate Kayson Gates followed up with 10.
Two Eagle River Boys 72, Noxon Boys 52
The Eagles' final game of the regular season came on Feb. 13 against Noxon and they wanted to end on a win.
They dismantled the Red Devils earlier in the year and it was much of the same. Two Eagle River got off to a 25-9 start in the first quarter. The first half ended with Noxon leading that quarter but trailing 37-26.
More high-scoring offense helped the Eagles get their confidence back after their loss to St. Regis the night before. Noxon was hopeless in stopping the Eagle onslaught. Two Eagle River secured this win 72-52 to close the regular season out strong.
The Eagles end the year with an 8-2 district record and 14-4 overall. They locked down the second seed in the district and earned a first-round bye. They will play the winner of Superior and Alberton at 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 20.
