Troy boys basketball celebrates senior class

The Troy Trojans boys basketball team didn’t win its Senior Night matchup last week against a very good Stillwater Christian squad, but their senior class of six is one that won’t be forgotten.
Those honored included Carson Orr, Trevor Guinard, Gunnar Fisher, Emerson Downey, Nolan Morris and Dmitrii Walenter.
With a handful of games to go, the Trojans are 10-7. Last year, they finished 13-9. The 2024-25 team was the first to reach the Western B Divisional Tournament since 2018.
After years of struggles, this senior class has given the home fans plenty to cheer about.
Last year’s record was their best since 2011-12 when the Trojans finished 16-6 and win the 7B title. Current head coach Cody Orr and his twin brother, Cory, led that team.
Cody’s nephew, Carson, leads the team in scoring and exciting plays as he averages several steals per game.
Downey wowed the home faithful a few weeks ago when he hit a school-record 10 3-pointers and scored 41 points in a Jan. 17 win over Victor.
Nolan Morris has been a steady presence at point guard the last two seasons while also getting to basket and scoring easy points.
Last Saturday against Stillwater Christian, things started poorly for the Trojans as the Cougars (19-2) led 16-4 midway through the first quarter.
But after a Trojans timeout, the hosts used a 6-0 run in the rest of the quarter to trim the deficit to six, 16-10. They kept it going in the second quarter with a 6-0 streak in the first 2:20 to tie the game at 16-16 on an Orr steal and score.
The Cougars responded with a 5-0 spurt to make it 21-16 with 1:32 left, but Morris found Walenter for a layup, then Orr had another steal. He was fouled and hit one of two shots to make it 21-19.
Stillwater missed on its next offensive possession, Troy got a long rebound and Downey hit a 3-pointer from well behind the line as the buzzer sounded to give the Trojans a 22-21 lead.
The big shot left Trojan fans in a state of euphoria as the game went to the second half.
Troy led by as many as seven points, 35-28, when Walenter scored with two minutes left.
The Cougars cut the lead to three at the end of three quarters and carried the momentum into the fourth. Three 3-pointers by Stillwater in the first 3:31 left Troy trailing 47-39. Another 3 by the Cougars with three minutes left made it 53-40 and effectively put the game out of reach as they claimed a 61-50 win.
Orr led Troy with 24 points while Thomas Guinard scored 10 and Downey had nine.
Troy will attempt to stop a two-game losing streak Friday at Eureka. The divisional playoffs will be held March 5-7 at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo.
