Charlo and Two Eagle River started the year off with some impressive performances. It was a mostly positive start for Lake County’s two Class C schools.

Two Eagle River Boys 85, Victor 39

The Eagles invited the Victor Pirates up north for an 85-38 drubbing that saw some major milestones hit.

It was a dominant performance across the board for the Eagles, who started the game with an impressive 28-point first quarter, and followed that up with a 20-point second quarter on their way to outscoring the Pirates by 26 in the first half.

The second half was much of the same, with Two Eagle River putting up 27 points in the third quarter. While the fourth quarter was the lowest scoring for the Eagles, they allowed only one point from Victor.

Multiple players impressed for the Eagles but senior Jayvian Burke was the star of the game. A 28-point performance earned him the Two Eagle River Athlete of the Week, adding to one of his many strong showings this year.

The Eagles move up to 5-2 on the year with another big game coming up. Two Eagle River will hit the road and take on the Superior Bobcats at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 10.

Two Eagle River Girls 52, Victor Girls 39

Another impressive result at home went the way of the Lady Eagles with a 52-39 win over the Lady Pirates.

Despite the final score, Victor showed grit in the first half by keeping it close in the first quarter and holding the Lady Eagles to just nine points in the second.

But Two Eagle River does not go down without a fight. After the halftime break, the Lady Eagles put on a strong defensive performance by only allowing three points in the third quarter.

Along with back-to-back double-digit showings in the second half, the Lady Eagles cruised to a victory over Victor.

Junior Keke Tenas was unbelievable, notching a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. This mark helped her hit 500 career points as a Lady Eagle as well, earning her the Two Eagle River Athlete of the Week.

The Lady Eagles move up to 3-3 on the season. They will try and extend the win streak by hosting Hot Springs at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 8.

St. Regis Boys 78, Charlo Boys 50

The Charlo Vikings were not as fortunate in the new year as they lost 78-50 on the road to the St. Regis Tigers.

The Tigers controlled the pace early with a 46-point first half. As the Vikings struggled to contain the score, they also weren’t able to put up significant pressure on the offensive end, with just 20 points in the first half.

The second half started with much of the same. The Tigers had a strong 19-point third quarter while the Vikings only managed nine points.

However, Charlo outscored St. Regis 21-13 in the fourth quarter. Despite the slight turnaround, it wasn’t enough to make the comeback.

Charlo drops to 2-5 this season. Their next game will be at home as they host the Noxon Red Devils at 7 p.m. on Jan. 9.

Charlo Girls 54, St. Regis Girls 31

It was a different result for the Charlo Lady Vikings as they took a stifling win over the St. Regis Lady Tigers 54-31.

There was little doubt that Charlo would ever surrender its lead with a strong first. The Lady Vikings won the points battle 29-16 while holding St. Regis to single-digit scoring in each quarter.

Much of the same happened in the third quarter, with a 20-point stomping out of the Lady Tigers’ game-low seven-point finish. Despite a lackluster fourth quarter, the Lady Vikings never faded and won convincingly.

Senior Brielle Zempel was a force in the win with 20 points, easily leading both teams in scoring.

The Lady Vikings move up to 4-2 before also meeting the Noxon Red Devils at Charlo High School at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 9.
