PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sandpoint girls squeak by Moscow in low-scoring affair
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 23 hours, 4 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 10, 2026 1:00 AM
GIRLS
Sandpoint 39, Moscow 29
MOSCOW — Well it wasn't exactly pretty, but Sandpoint got the job done — largely in part to their shooting from behind the 3-point line.
Junior Brecken Mire erupted for four 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 14 points, junior Jordyn Tomco splashed three 3-pointers and collected 13 points, and the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Bears 16-8 in the fourth quarter to capture a 5A Inland Empire League victory on Thursday night inside Moscow High's Bear Den.
Sandpoint trailed 10-4 after one quarter of play, but outscored Moscow 10-3 in the second quarter as junior Jaylah Butler found fellow junior Carly Laybourne on a backdoor cut for a 14-13 lead heading into halftime.
In the third, Tomco sunk a triple to start things off, but Moscow stayed in reach as the game headed into the fourth at 23-21, Lady Bulldogs in front. In the final quarter, that's when Mire got hot as she found nylon from beyond the arc on back-to-back possessions to help Sandpoint extend their lead to 31-23 ... and then again to push the advantage to 36-25 with about four minutes to go in regulation. Tomco hit her third trey of the night with under two minutes to go to push the tally to 39-27 as the Lady Bulldogs held on for the win.
"It's always tough coming down and playing in the Bear Den — we've struggled with that for years," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening noted. "Our composure through our struggling of scoring was great, and being able to turn it on in the fourth quarter was huge after sticking out the rough scoring drought we were in."
Jessa Skinner recorded eight points, seven rebounds and three assists for Moscow, which used a high-pressure, 2-3 zone on defense to stymie the Lady Bulldogs, but fell to 8-5 on the year with the loss.
Mire produced a team-high five steals and a team-high four assists, Tomco had six rebounds and four steals, Laybourne contributed six points, and sophomore Willow Betz pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and blocked two shots for Sandpoint (13-2), which will host Coeur d'Alene, also 13-2 on the season, for a 6A/5A Inland Empire League showdown on Tuesday.
