BATTLE FOR THE PADDLE: Sandpoint swept by Lakeland in 10th annual spirit competition
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 48 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 18, 2026 1:00 AM

RATHDRUM — Senior Logan Roos mustered up 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, junior Brock Yarbrough tallied five points and a game-high six assists, but troubles from the free throw line plagued the Bulldogs in 5A Inland Empire League loss to the Hawks on Friday night at Hawk Court.
Junior Derrick Chamberlain registered seven points, junior Knox Williams six points, two assists and two steals, and senior Caiden Gion had five points and six rebounds for Sandpoint, which trailed 25-14 at intermission.
Lakeland, led by a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds from Peyton Hillman, was ahead 32-18 at one point in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs used a 20-6 run to eventually tie the game 38-38. After the Hawks scored five unanswered, Knox Williams converted a putback after a missed free throw and Gion splashed a triple to keep the game at a 45-44 Lakeland advantage, but the Hawks held on for what was their fourth consecutive victory.
Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said after a timeout with six minutes to go in regulation, he thought his team started to play their brand of basketball again, outscoring Lakeland 22-14 in the fourth quarter.
"Lakeland did a good job of controlling the tempo, especially in the beginning; we were a little anxious on some shots that we took, which led to their 11-point lead early on in that first quarter," coach Love said. "In a spirit game, playing against a really good opponent and with so much energy around you, it's hard to make a comeback."
Senior Tyler Weisz and Williams also connected on 3-pointers, senior Kingston Corbett netted four points, and junior Logan Iverson had three points and three steals for Sandpoint (7-5), which will host Lewiston on Friday for another 5A IEL affair.
"I think this is going to be a real battle in our league, potentially there are one-and-a-half bids up for grabs, not like in the past where it's been clear cut with just one," coach Love noted. "It's going to be a dog fight against a tough Lewiston team. I know that the kids are going to come ready and prepared."
