There wasn’t just rivalry basketball on the south shore of Flathead Lake but also in the packed gym of Charlo High School where the Charlo Vikings and the Two Eagle River Eagles faced off last Friday, along with the Lady Vikings and Lady Eagles.
While only one team can win, all four teams showed promise as the conference slate continues to trudge along. Let’s take a look at how Lake County’s Class C schools did this week.
Charlo Girls 52, Two Eagle River Girls 19
It was the girls who went first on Jan. 23, where Charlo looked for another win to add to their impressive season total. While Two Eagle River was finding some consistency, they came up against a juggernaut in the Lady Vikings.
Defensively, Charlo dominated. They only allowed the Lady Eagles to score over five points in a quarter once, while nearly outscoring them every quarter except for one. The Lady Vikings were crafty when it came to turnovers and controlled that battle the whole game.
Rebounding was also strong from the Lady Vikings, as it gave the Lady Eagles almost no second-chance opportunities. A traditionally strong offensive team struggled against a Charlo defense that has been consistent all year.
The Lady Vikings won out 52-19. GG Hawk led the way with 16 points while Brielle Zempel followed up with 11. Keke Tenas was the leading scorer for Two Eagle River with six points.
Two Eagle River Boys 80, Charlo Boys 63
It was a high-scoring game on Friday for the boys' bout as Charlo looked to continue a win streak. However, it was Two Eagle River that wanted to stay close to the top of 14C.
For the Vikings, it was almost impossible to stop the freight train that is the Eagles’ offense. It was a 50-point first half for Two Eagle River. While it played good defense in the first half, it didn’t need to with the volume they shot at.
Charlo rallied in the fourth quarter with an unreal 28-point showing. Two Eagle River was playing mostly bench players for most of that quarter but it brought the starters back in as Charlo started to come back.
The deficit was too much for the Vikings as the Eagles won 80-63. Talon Addison and Kayson Gates led the Eagles with 18 points each. Tasker Brown helped try to engineer the comeback for Charlo with a 23-point performance of his own.
Two Eagle River Girls 62, Alberton 22
The Lady Eagles needed a rebound win when they took the trip to Alberton on Jan. 24. Not only did they get it, they got it with style.
Led by Tenas, the Lady Eagles left no doubt against the Lady Panthers by never once trailing the entire game. They scored double-digits in each quarter while pushing the Lady Panthers to just single-digit responses. Alberton only scored one point in the third quarter.
The Lady Eagles rolled to a 62-22 win on the back of Keke Tenas’s 20-point performance. Teammates Jodessa Dickson and Emma Spotted Eagle both had 10 points in the win.
Two Eagle River Boys 76, Alberton Boys 48
It was a good showing on Jan. 24 for both Two Eagle River teams as the boys continued to put up astonishing scoring numbers against Alberton.
The game was almost over in the first quarter when Two Eagle River outscored the Panthers 29-8. A gap that large is hard enough to come back from, regardless of how much time they had and the Panthers struggled to do so.
The scoring numbers for the Eagles were consistent all game, going double-digit in every quarter of play. While they never replicated the stunning first quarter score, it never mattered as the Eagles won 76-48.
It was a well-rounded effort with Talon Addison leading the way in scoring with 18 points. He was followed by Jayvian Burke’s 16-point performance. Alberton also had an outstanding player in Devin Hill who dropped 27 points.
Charlo Girls 41, Superior Girls 35
Charlo took at roadtrip to Superior on Jan. 24 and, for the girls, it was a good way to end the week.
Another strong defensive performance for the Lady Vikings saw Superior struggle to find a moment early in the game. Charlo didn’t score at a high volume but they made the scoring chances they had count.
Even with a strong second half from Superior, it was Charlo who held strong to keep the 41-35 win. Zempel led the way for the Lady Vikings with a 14-point performance.
Superior Boys 53, Charlo Boys 46
It was another close one on Jan. 24 when the Charlo boys took on Superior. The Vikings and Bobcats battled it out in the first half with Charlo getting the 25-20 edge going into halftime.
However, Superior stormed into the lead with a 21-point performance in the third quarter. Charlo found points in the fourth quarter, but Superior’s surge was too much. The Vikings lost 53-46.
Ronson Hout led all Vikings in scoring with 14 points, while Kenyan Dummont was close behind with 10 points.
