Mission Valley Mariners open Firecracker with bang

Mission Valley Mariners opened up last weekend’s annual Firecracker Tournament at O’Malley Field in Polson with a complete game performance from Jake Helser to win 6-0 over the Missoula Impact Friday.
Helser allowed two hits in the win and sat down four batters.
Mission Valley capitalized on two walks and five hit batsmen in the victory, only picking up a pair of hits.
Holden Emerson provided one of the hits in the form of a solo home run to lead off the fifth and make it 4-0. Brayson Dumont had the other on a sixth inning single.
Mission Valley 15, Lethbridge Lakers 2
Mission Valley followed up the performance with a 15-2 showing over the Lethbridge Lakers.
Cole Wadsworth and Cody Haggard went yard in the second game, while Noah Agliano had two triples. The Mariners had six extra-base hits in the game.
Haggard also tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits. He fanned eight. The game ended after five innings due to the run rule.
Lethbridge took the lead early on a double from Lorenzo Martin in the opening frame. A ground ball scored another to make it 2-0, but it was all Mariners from there.
Four runs in the third and 11 in the fourth gave Mission Valley control of the game.
Mission Valley 9, Flathead A’s 4
The tournament continued Saturday for the Mariners with another doubleheader against the Flathead A’s and the Fort McLeod Royals.
Cody Haggard and Brayson DuMont each doubled twice and Mission Valley took a 9-4 win over the Flathead A’s.
Jaxson Cadwell and Kyler Voermans drove in runs for the A’s (8-5) in the opening inning to give them a 2-0 lead.
Haggard quickly tied the game with a two-run double in the bottom half of the frame. Jake Helser made it 3-2 with an RBI double in the second.
Cadwell hit another RBI single in the fifth to give Flathead a 4-3 lead, but Mission Valley tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.
In the sixth, the Mariners seized control with a walk and a hit batsman bringing in two runs before Haggard cleared the bases with his second double of the game to center giving Mission Valley a 9-4 advantage.
Fort McLeod 11, Mission Valley 3
In the second game of the day, Fort McLeod handed the Mariners (12-10) an extra innings defeat, 11-3.
Against the Royals, Holden Emerson started the scoring in the first with an RBI double to left.
A double from Nixon Strangway in the second put Fort McLeod (12-18) in the lead 2-1, while K Scott squeezed home another run in the third inning to make it 3-1.
Paxson DuMont scored Cole Wadsworth with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Down to their final out, Haggard singled to right to tie the game at three and send it to extras.
In the extra frame, Fort McLeod took the lead on a single from C Schmid and jumped on the Mariners for eight runs and an 11-3 lead.
Cashe Kropinak worked three strikeouts in a scoreless bottom half to secure the win.
Caleb Gfroerer went seven innings on the mound for the Mariners, allowing three runs on six hits and fanning a pair.
Flathead A’s 5, Mission Valley 1
The Flathead A’s used a three-run second inning to take the lead and went on to defeat the Mission Valley Mariners at the Firecracker tournament on Sunday afternoon, claiming the tourney title. The hometown Mariners took second.
Mission Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first when Paxson DuMont doubled home a run, but Flathead answered with three runs in the second and added two runs in the third to build a 5-1 advantage.
Wyatt Hanchett earned the win for the A’s, allowing three runs on six hits over four innings. Hunter Luedtke took the loss after surrendering seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings.
Brayson DuMont led the Mariners at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Noah Agliano also had two hits, while Liam Jackson drew two walks and Cole Wadsworth stole two bases.
