A Kalispell man who allegedly fled on foot after causing a wreck in 2025 that left two people hospitalized and their vehicle totaled is now facing a felony charge.

Casey Joseph Steiner, 44, is expected to appear before Judge Dan Wilson in Flathead County District Court for his arraignment on a single count of felony duty to give information and render aid on July 16. Booked into the county jail June 6, he remains behind bars with bail set $85,000.

When Kalispell Police officers arrived at the scene of the wreck near the intersection of U.S. 93 and Third Avenue East about 11:19 p.m., Oct. 10, 2025, they found one vehicle ditched on the east side of the highway and a second with two people trapped inside off the road and in the grass, according to court documents. As firefighters pried the Chevrolet Impala open to free the occupants, officers searched the abandoned black GMC Yukon.

Inside, they found a wallet containing multiple cards linked to Steiner, court documents said. The vehicle's registration also came back to Steiner and another individual.

One of the people traveling in the Impala told officers that they were headed north on the highway when the Yukon struck them from behind. Investigators determined the force of the impact sent the Impala about 200 feet over the curb and spun it around.

A witness, who was waiting to turn left onto Kelly Road, described seeing the driver of the Yukon clamor out of a window after the crash, court documents said.

Investigators got another tip about 11:50 p.m., when Steiner's ex called dispatch and told them that he had gotten into a wreck with the Yukon, according to court documents. She said he had come to her Kalispell home but jumped a fence after she dialed 911 and police officers pulled up to the house.

Speaking to investigators again the next day, she said she had been told by neighbors that Steiner was involved in a crash with the Yukon. Having seen him before the collision, she described him as drunk at the time, according to court documents.

Investigators also learned that Steiner was under GPS monitoring and a review of the data collected showed him in the area of the collision when it occurred, court documents said.

If convicted, Steiner faces the loss of his driver's license, between one and 10 years in Montana State Prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
