Golden Rule Brake held a soft opening for its newest shop at 3637 N. Government Way in Coeur d'Alene on Friday. The message on its reader board read, "Repairing Stuff Your Husband Fixed Since 1954." 

"My grandpa and his brother started the business on Monroe Street in Spokane. My dad bought it in 1980," current owner Dallas Low said. "It wasn't doing so well at that time, but he grew the company to three locations.  

Low bought Golden Rule Brake in 2013. 

"It was a real treat for me to come into an established business," Low said. "I ran a nonprofit Christian ministry before buying it. My wife is a songwriter and recording artist. We traveled all over the country in a Greyhound bus in the '70s performing Christian music." 

Low has added two locations since he took ownership of the family business. 

"I felt if I could build on the reputation that my dad established all those years, and continue to do the fundamentals right, which really comes down to being honest with our customers and hiring good people, I was going to succeed," Low said. "Here we are 13 years later with five locations." 

Those shops are on Monroe Street and Francis Avenue in Spokane, on Pines Road in Spokane Valley, East Seltice Way in Post Falls and Government Way in Coeur d'Alene. 

"We have over 30 employees, including my son, Jeremiah. He's been with the business for four years," Low said. " He does all the stuff I don't like doing — is very good with the details — loves crunching numbers — doing the analysis that comes with owning a company with multiple locations." 

Mike Thrasher is his general manager. 

"He's been in that position for two and a half years and is such a blessing to me," Low said. Prior to him coming on board, I was doing the hiring, firing and all the employee-related stuff. That really burned me out over the course of years, and he's taken that burden off me, and I'm so grateful for that." 

Golden Rule Brake has 12 bays at the Coeur d'Alene location. 

"We do brakes and suspension work," Low said. "So, anything steering related, shock struts, alignments, we can handle it." 

It's not just cars and trucks they work on; they work on commercial vehicles as well. 

"We work on bigger fleet trucks, especially at this location — have big enough lifts to get the job done," Low said. 

Low said he has plans to open more locations. 

"We're thinking about Airway Heights, Liberty Lake and the Tri-Cities," Low said. "Mike (his GM) has been suggesting we open a shop in Sandpoint, too." 

Golden Rule Brake on Government Way is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

• A new commercial building is planned for the Riverstone development at 1570 W. Tilford Lane and will bring at least one new dining option to the area. The 7,500-square-foot mixed-use building's targeted finish date is this summer.    

• The 33-unit, mixed-use "Nonna" building across from Post Falls City Hall on Spokane Street is anticipated to be completed by October of 2026. 

• A five-story, 173-room Hilton Dual Brand Hotel is planned for a 2.71-acre parcel of land off Lee Court and Appleway Avenue in Coeur d'Alene. The project's start and completion dates haven't been determined
