A rapidly expanding wildfire west of Olney prompted numerous road closures and evacuation warnings Thursday as dangerous fire weather moves into the region this weekend.

The Skillet Fire started Wednesday afternoon about 3 miles northwest of Good Creek and grew to roughly 800 acres overnight. It was burning in an area of dead and downed trees and thick timber, forest officials said.

Homes and other structures were considered threatened as the blaze moved east.

A local Type 3 team took command of the fire Wednesday. Firefighters on the ground were supported by aerial resources, including a Very Large Air Tanker.

Road closures ordered by the Flathead and Kootenai national forests on Thursday morning include Good Creek, Alder Creek, Martin Creek, Plume Creek, West Plume, Keith Mountain, Miller Creek, West Advent, Alder Slope, Twin Meadows and Martin Divide.

On Thursday afternoon, Flathead County issued evacuation warnings for addresses on Good Creek Rd, Old Good Creek Rd, Gregg Creek Rd, and Alder Creek Rd. 

South of Frenchtown, the Alder 1 Fire grew to 923 acres in the Rock Creek area. More than 200 firefighters were assigned to the fire in the Lolo National Forest.

The Silvertip Fire deep in the Bob Marshall Wilderness was estimated at 4,126 acres Thursday. Roughly 15 firefighters were working to manage the fire, which is about 30 miles northeast of Condon.

A fire weather watch was issued for the Kootenai, Flathead and Glacier Park regions beginning Saturday, when west winds of up to 45 mph are possible. Temperatures could approach 100 degrees in some areas, along with humidity levels near 10%.
