The high country of Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness could see upwards of 3 inches of rain by Monday, the National Weather Service is warning.

A closed low system is expected to sit east of the Divide this weekend, bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region starting today, with the heaviest rain from Sunday into Monday.

Highs in Glacier Park’s backcountry Sunday and Monday will be in the 40s and lows in the mid-30s, National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Lukinbeal said.

Having said that, Logan Pass should stay all rain, he said. But the high peaks could see a slushy snow.

The valleys, like Columbia Falls, will see 1 to 1.5 inches of rain from the storm. Tuesday and Wednesday will remain showery, with a gradual warmup, Lukinbeal said.

“It’s going to be a soaker everywhere,” Lukinbeal said.

The rain is beneficial, however. Southwest Montana has been in an extended drought and should see about an inch of rain from the storm. Summer rains are also critical in preventing wildfires.
