NIBJ: NIA - Women of Impact

MARILEE WALLACE, I.O.M. / NIA Women of Impact | | UPDATED 6 days, 14 hours AGO

For years, we've talked about the importance of "networking." But perhaps it's time to retire that word.

Today's most meaningful connections aren't built through networking — they're built through community.

Whether you're growing a business, navigating retirement, raising children, changing careers, or simply looking for deeper friendships, connecting with other women is one of the most valuable investments you can make. The right community can inspire you, challenge you, support you, and introduce you to opportunities you never saw coming.

One mistake I often see women make is feeling pressured to join the first networking group they encounter. My advice? Don't rush it.

Visit different groups. Attend a meeting, an event, or a gathering. Pay attention to how you feel when you leave. Did the group energize you? Did you learn something? Were people genuinely interested in who you are, not just what you do?

The best communities create a reciprocal relationship. You should be able to share your talents, experience, and wisdom while also learning from the gifts of others. The strongest connections happen when everyone contributes and everyone grows.

Fortunately, North Idaho offers many wonderful opportunities for women seeking connection. Organizations such as Soroptimist International of Coeur d'Alene, TRIBE North Idaho, Mamas in Business North Idaho, Cool Connections, Polka Dot Powerhouse North Idaho, and other local groups provide spaces for women to build relationships, develop leadership skills, and support one another. Some focus on business, some on service, and others on friendship and personal growth.

The key is finding the community that feels right for you.

At NIA Women of IMPACT, we've always believed that connection is the foundation of growth. Through our annual Onward & Upward Women's Conference, Leadership Roundtables, networking events, and community gatherings, we often serve as a bridge — helping women discover not only our programs but also other organizations, resources, and relationships throughout North Idaho.

In many ways, NIA - Women of Impact has become a connector of connectors.

Because at the end of the day, success isn't built alone. It grows through relationships, shared experiences, mentorship, collaboration, and community.

So, if you're looking to expand your circle, don't focus on networking. Focus on belonging. Your network will naturally grow from there.
