Plans for a new temple and meeting house of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will go before the Coeur d'Alene Design Review Commission at noon Thursday.

Plans for the 10.91-acre lot on the corner of Hanley Avenue and Coeur Terre Boulevard include a nearly 30,000-square-foot, three-story building featuring a spire in addition to a meeting house with two ancillary buildings at just over 17,000 square feet.

The Coeur d’Alene temple will be a first for North Idaho.

The proposed temple will seat 184 people. The meetinghouse will seat 538 people, and plans call for a total of 266 parking spaces.

North Idaho is home to seven stakes and 56 congregations of Latter-day Saints ranging from Lewiston to Sandpoint.

A temple is considered a sacred place for Latter-day Saints and is only open for members in good standing. It is to be used for worship, education, baptisms and marriages and will be closed Sundays when members attend regular worship with their local congregations.

Idaho currently has seven dedicated temples in operation in Idaho Falls, Boise, Rexburg, Twin Falls, Meridian, Pocatello and Burley. The Coeur d’Alene Temple is one of four additional Idaho projects currently in the planning or construction phases.

The DRC is scheduled to meet in the Community Room at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library. There will be time for public comment.
