Longtime downtown jewelry store closing its doors

Super Silver, a premier destination for exquisite jewelry for nearly two decades at 414 E. Sherman Ave., is going out of business.

The store was well known for its sterling silver and semi-precious stone jewelry, earrings, rings, toe rings and Native American pieces.

“We started the business in October of 2009 — our first location was on Fourth Street,” Kristy Chappelear, co-owner of Super Silver, said. “We’ve been here ever since.”

Kristy and her husband, Mike, are California transplants. Mike said the business developed out of thin air.

“Kristy and my sister, Stephanie, who moved here, too, were both in need of employment,” Mike said. “They were both interested in jewelry and thought they could sell toe rings at some of the local fairs, so they gave it a try.”

It wasn’t long after that that Mike got a call from his dad in California, who asked them to consider opening a jewelry store.

“He was in the business and a friend of his, George, had four or five jewelry stores in California and Washington. And as a payback for a previous favor from my dad, they both helped us get started,” Mike said. “If it wasn’t for them, this place would never have existed.”

Mike said Kristy and Stephanie ran the business for “quite a long time.”

“Stephanie passed away from cancer about four years ago, and it’s been just Kristy running it,” Mike said. “I have a full-time job elsewhere.”

With Coeur d’Alene being a tourist destination, Kristy said people from all walks of life have browsed the Super Silver showroom and purchased jewelry over the years.

“It has been incredible — I’ve met some amazing people — customers whom I’ve made friends with over the years,” Kristy said. “I’m really going to miss them.”

Mike said they’ve had a lot of fun doing business in Coeur d’Alene as well.

“It's been enjoyable because Kristy's always been into jewelry, to silver and stones and what have you, so this was really kind of a perfect fit for her,” Mike said. “Stephanie was always a cowgirl — so she liked the western part of the business — we had some western themed items and some Navajo pieces.”

Although Mike said the Native American pieces were one of their bigger draws, he said their ring section topped everything.

“Our ring station holds over 10,000 rings,” he said. “The sterling silver and semi-precious gemstones like turquoise, amber, quartz and Larimar have been a huge draw for customers.”

Other than the annual summer street fair, Kristy said their showroom is the only place where people can see their jewelry.

As for the reason for getting out of the business, Mike said the timing seems right.

“We're just getting to the point where I'm on the verge of retirement, and Kristy was thinking about retirement too,” Mike said. “Right now, seemed like a good time to do it.”

The Chappelears, last day of business is Aug. 18. Until then, all inventory is marked down 20%.

“That discount may get higher as we get closer to closing the store,” Mike said.

The next chapter in Kristy and Mike’s life involves a lot of travel.

“Travel and family. That’s our priority,” Kristy said. “We have friends and family in California, Tennessee, Colorado and Nevada that we haven’t seen in quite a while. We honeymooned in Hawaii, so I’d like to go back there too.”

Thousands of rings are discouted 20% or more during Super Silver's retirement sale.
Some jewelry items are half off during Super Silver's going-out-of-business sale.
