Whitefish runners race in Helena, Pablo

Whitefish cross country runners enjoyed an interesting race format last week. The top five varsity boys and girls headed to Helena for the 7x7 invite while other team members traveled to Pablo for the Mission Shadow Duals.
At both meets, teams designated their number one, two, three, four and so on, positions. Each team’s number one lines up with the other teams’ number ones, two with two, three with three, etc. It allows for one large race with boys and girls of all classes racing on the course at the same time.
In Helena, the Bulldogs lined up in the number 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 positions. A highlight was freshman Porter Shehan winning the number three race by a full 20 seconds, crossing the line in 16 minutes, 16 seconds. Ean Flynn placed 23rd in the number five lineup with 19:36. For the girls, Kendall Dye represented in the number three position race by placing 14th in a time of 21:23.
In Pablo, several junior varsity athletes turned in personal best times as they near the end of the season. In the varsity races, Marcus Mercer and Logan Covey set personal records, and Mason Loeffler had a season best, which might influence who makes the top five varsity lineup as the Bulldogs approach the state championship.
The Western A Divisionals is Friday in Bigfork. The state championship is in Billings Oct. 24.
