A couple's spat allegedly led to last week's deadly shooting outside of a Kalispell apartment complex.
Kaleb Anthony Hilliard, 21, argued with his girlfriend at a late-night Oct. 12 party on the 100 block of Seventh Avenue West North before returning and opening fire, according to a newly filed affidavit in Flathead County District Court. One man was killed and three other people were injured during the shooting.
Prosecutors have since charged Hilliard with one count each of deliberate homicide and criminal endangerment as well as two counts of attempted deliberate homicide. Held in the county jail with bail set at $1 million, Hilliard is expected to appear before Judge Heidi Ulbricht on Oct. 22 for his arraignment.
Witnesses described the disagreement between Hilliard and his girlfriend escalating throughout the evening, involving suspicions of infidelity, abuse by Hilliard and a possible breakup, according to court documents. When Hilliard returned to the gathering in the early morning hours of Oct. 13, two men approached the driver's side window of his vehicle.
As they drew near, Hilliard allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire. Bullets struck both men and a third person — a woman who lived at the apartment complex, court documents said.
Hilliard sped off after pulling the trigger, dragging along his girlfriend, who had been standing by his vehicle's rear end when the shooting occurred, court documents said. She suffered road rash and injuries to her head.
Surveillance footage captured one of the wounded men shooting at Hilliard as he drove off, according to court documents.
Kalispell Police officers arrived at the complex about 1:15 a.m. One man, who authorities identified Monday as 19-year-old Anthony Williams of Eureka, was declared dead at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.
The other man injured in the confrontation sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen and elbow while the woman took a bullet to her right shoulder, court documents said.
Officers tracked Hilliard to his home, where he had gone to bed, court documents said. He allegedly told his mother that his girlfriend's unfaithfulness precipitated the shooting.
Questioned by investigators, Hilliard said he returned to the party to fetch his girlfriend. He allegedly admitted to opening fire but told authorities that he pulled the trigger after the men approached his window and began threatening him.
Hilliard told officers he was afraid for his life, court documents said.
Deliberate homicide and attempted deliberate homicide carry the possibility of life sentences. Criminal endangerment is punishable by up to 10 years behind bars and a $50,000 fine.
